New tool helps collect and share data |
|
PDAC’s Exploration Assessment Digital Data Formats (EADDF) guidelines are a way to help improve discovery rates of mineral exploration in Canada. The guidelines propose a uniform national standard for digital data submission for jurisdictional mine recording offices. While each jurisdiction has its own formatting requirements there are few for data that is submitted in digital form. Learn more |

Call for applications: Geo-Mapping for Energy & Minerals (GEM) |
|
The second phase of NRCan’s GEM program – GEM-2 – is calling for grant proposals for multidisciplinary projects that will be complete by March 31, 2018. This program helps to financially support the development of innovative approaches and tools to facilitate the use of GEM data in northern regions of Canada. The program provides grant funding up to $25,000. The deadline to apply is December 1. |

Applications open for Junior Exploration Assistance Program (JEAP) |
JEAP encourages junior exploration companies to foster training and capacity building for new and potential prospectors, and encourages Indigenous Peoples to become more involved in prospecting or gain employment in the mineral development sector. JEAP allows the Ontario Prospectors Association to supply grants to qualifying companies to complete early-stage exploration on properties in Ontario. The fourth round of funding is open until December 15.

Iron ore prices forecast to drop |
|
According to a new BMI report, iron ore prices will drop from $70 per tonne (2017) to $50 per tonne next year, due to decreased demand from China. The report says that the refocusing of Chinese economic growth away from heavy industry to services will dampen Chinese demand for iron ore. When combined with simultaneous elevated global supply, this will put a lid on prices in the coming years. Learn more |

Glencore and Canadian pension fund close to launch royalty firm |
|
Swiss miner and commodities trader Glencore is expected to close a $700 million deal with the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan to create a new base-metals royalty firm. The Canadian fund will contribute around $350 million in capital to allow the new firm to acquire further royalty streams from other projects. The company’s plan is to emulate the model of companies such as Franco-Nevada, which does not own any mines but instead makes money by reselling a percentage of other firms’ output. Learn more |

Teck Chairman Norman B. Keevil has published a book titled ‘Never Rest on Your Ores – Building a Mining Company, One Stone at a Time’. Renew your Core membership by December 31 and save $80. Annual fees for Core members are $90.48 compared to $166.67 for Regular members. Core members qualify for a number of benefits, including substantial discounts on PDAC Convention registration fees and Short Courses. Payments made after December 31 will be processed as Regular members.

|
PDAC is accepting applications for the Student-Industry Mineral Exploration Workshop (S-IMEW), held annually in Sudbury in May. This two-week expense paid workshop exposes upper-year geoscience students to all aspects of the mineral exploration industry. Apply before December 8. Mary-Claire Ward Geoscience Award |
|
Applications are being accepted for the 2018 Mary-Claire Ward Geoscience Award. Graduate geology students enrolled in Canadian universities are eligible to apply. The award is intended to encourage and support a graduate student in Canada whose thesis embodies the concept of increasing our knowledge of the geological history of Canada through mapping. Save money on travel to PDAC 2018 Convention |
|
PDAC has set up a fund to help student groups cover costs of travelling to Toronto for the PDAC Convention. Funding is allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. The deadline to apply is February 2. Apply for Convention Travel Funding online.

Andrew Cheatle has left the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) to move on to new challenges in his career. PDAC and its Board of Directors wish Andrew all the best in his future endeavours.
Effective November 13, 2017 Lisa McDonald is acting as Executive Director (Interim). Ms. McDonald has been with PDAC since 1996 and has served the association as its Chief Operations Officer since 2008. |
