Senior Research Scientist

Evan M. Smith is a Senior Research Scientist at the Gemological Institute of America. His primary research focus is the geology of diamonds and the deep earth. This work has contributed to the growing view that diamonds are some of the most scientifically valuable samples of our planet. His findings have been published in the distinguished journals Science and Nature, as well as being featured by NPR, The Washington Post, and The Economist. Dr. Smith holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Engineering from Queen’s University and a Ph.D. in Geology from the University of British Columbia.
