Large gem diamonds and their influence on mine economics

DATE
Monday, March 4, 2024
LOCATION
Room 716
In the last decade, there has been an increased focus on large, high-value diamonds and their impact on mine economics. Detecting the presence of these diamonds is challenging, especially during exploration and early stages of evaluation. This session will summarize the genesis and recovery of the large diamonds and review the technology used to recover them, followed by case studies of the Letšeng (Lesotho), Karowe (Botswana) and Meya (Sierra Leone) diamond mines known for their large diamonds including Type II.
Chair(s): Brooke Clements, Craton Minerals Ltd. & North Shore Uranium Ltd.; Barbara Scott Smith, Scott-Smith Petrology, Vancouver & George Read, Star Diamond Corporation, Saskatoon, Canada
