| ADVOCACY

 

We are encouraged to see the Government of Canada committing further support for the mineral industry in the Federal Budget 2023 by announcing a 30% cleantech manufacturing tax credit, alongside funds to speed up federal assessments and expand Indigenous engagement. PDAC will focus on how these commitments turn into actions in our advocacy for members, the mineral industry, and for the future of Canada. Read the press release.

The Canadian Mining Hall of Fame (CMHF) is now accepting nominations for individuals who have shaped Canada’s global leadership in mining, embodied the important role mining plays in Canadian society, and inspired future generations into the industry. To make a nomination, a member organization must be notified by May 1. Learn more about nomination guidelines, categories of achievement and key dates on their website.

| HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT

 

The Mining Industry Human Resources Council (MiHR) and PDAC are conducting a survey about Canadian mining and mineral exploration. Let us know your thoughts on the issues and challenges being faced in the minerals sector to help shape the strategic priorities for human resource development in the industry. Student-Industry Mineral Exploration Workshop (S-IMEW) returns to Sudbury from May 4-16, where 22 of the top nominated upper-year Canadian post-secondary geoscience students will learn about the extensive variety of careers in the mineral exploration industry and the adventures of being a geoscientist. Glenn Nolan, PDAC Past President and VP Indigenous Enterprises, Ring of Fire Metals will deliver the keynote address at the Welcome Reception, sponsored by Barrick, on May 5 at Dynamic Earth, Sudbury.

The PDAC policy programs offer a platform for case studies, experiential activities and grounded stories that help the industry conscientiously discover and develop deposits of the minerals and metals that make modern life possible. | RESPONSIBLE EXPLORATION

 

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), Fish and Fish Habitat Protection Program (FFHPP) has announced the launch of their Wave 3 engagement plan - now available on the Talk Fish Habitat platform. To garner critical feedback and ensure DFO regulations are conducive to our industry, the PDAC Lands and Regulations Committee wants to hear from you! What has been your experience working with the Fisheries Act and/or related regulations? Take our survey today.

 

During the PDAC 2023 convention, the Canadian Diamond Drillers’ Association (CDDA) launched phase one of Bring It To The Surface, a campaign to highlight mental wellness throughout the mining industry.

 

We encourage all members to show their support and stay updated on the campaign by taking the pledge today.

 

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) recently released an exposure draft of their Sector Standard for Mining. Approved by the Global Sustainability Standards Board (GSSB), this is now open for public comment. This a standard for sustainability and/or ESG reporting that will be applicable for organizations whose primary focus lies in: exploration and extraction; support activities for mining; and supply of specialized products and services to mining organizations. The public comment period will remain open until April 30. Learn more.
