| ADVOCACY

 

We are encouraged to see the Government of Canada committing further support for the mineral industry in the Federal Budget 2023 by announcing a 30% cleantech manufacturing tax credit, alongside funds to speed up federal assessments and expand Indigenous engagement. PDAC will focus on how these commitments turn into actions in our advocacy for members, the mineral industry, and for the future of Canada. Read the press release.

 

PDAC hosted the annual Government Day at #PDAC2023, bringing together over 35 Members of Federal Parliament and Provincial Parliamentarians, Cabinet Ministers and Senators to meet directly with PDAC’s Board of Directors, tour the Trade Show and Investors Exchange, and connect directly with convention attendees. The Canadian Mining Hall of Fame (CMHF) has issued its 2024 Call for Nominations. CMHF is now accepting nominations for individuals who have shaped Canada’s global leadership in mining, embodied the important role mining plays in Canadian society, and inspired future generations into the industry. | CAPITAL MARKETS

 

PDAC released its annual update, 'Mineral Finance 2023: Shifting tides within the mineral industry', outlining the business environment in which the mineral sector operated in 2022. The rapidly changing economic landscape translated to a drop in metal prices and the availability of capital for the mineral sector. However, exploration expenditures remained strong as the robust financing environment from 2021 carried over into last year’s work plans and programs for most mineral explorers. 'Little did I know what was in store for me as I embarked on my journey to become the President of the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada. Who could have imagined the events of the last couple of years: a global pandemic necessitating a virtual convention in 2021, followed by a last-minute change of dates in 2022 to ensure we could host a successful in-person event – in June no less!'. Please join us in welcoming our new President of PDAC, Raymond Goldie. With decades of experience in the industry, Raymond has held positions as a field geologist, and has worked for investment dealers in Toronto, Canada as a mineral economist and financial analyst. Raymond has also served on a number of PDAC Committees. Stay tuned for a conversation with Raymond, coming soon.

 

On Wednesday, March 8 we celebrated International Women's Day and all the amazing women in mineral exploration and mining who have helped PDAC and the industry become what it is today. Although there is always more work to be done, we are proud that PDAC is making headway with a Board of Directors that includes the most women in PDAC history. Learn more.

| HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT

 

Over 900 students from across the globe travelled to Toronto to attend #PDAC2023. The sold-out Student-Industry Mixer, sponsored by Lundin Group, was a hub for networking with industry professionals, the Guided Tours of the Exhibits introduced students to various #studentfriendly companies and over 20 industry professionals participated in one-on-one mentoring sessions with over 90 students. The 14th Annual Student Minerals Colloquium held during the PDAC Convention featured a diverse range of posters from over 70 BSc, MSc and PhD students, covering a wide array of mineral topics.

 

After a rigorous judging process by industry professionals, awards were presented to the top posters at each academic level. See the winners.

Students from Belgium, Cameroon, Croatia, Ecuador, France, Guinea, Hungary, Peru, Sweden, and South Africa competed in the finalist presentations of the NGEA™ for cash prizes totalling $14,000. | INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS

 

PDAC, along with the World Economic Forum and Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, hosted the 8th annual International Mines Ministers Summit on March 6. This brought together more than 20 international Ministers responsible for mining, along with representatives from industry and civil society, to discuss 'Closing the Loop: Developing a circular mineral industry'. A report summarizing the summit will be available shortly and past reports are available now.

| MEMBERSHIP

 

The new Member Referral Program is in full swing with over 200 members from 23 countries vying for Grand Prizes. PDAC confirmed the election of nine members to its Board of Directors during the Association’s Annual General Meeting held March 5. The Board of Directors comprises industry professionals who support and guide the work of the association.

Thank you to the 23,819 attendees who joined us at #PDAC2023 for an inspirational convention! It was great to see international members of the mineral exploration and mining community connect in Toronto again. We can't wait to see you all for #PDAC2024 from March 3-6.

| RESPONSIBLE EXPLORATION

 

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) recently released an exposure draft of their Sector Standard for Mining. Approved by the Global Sustainability Standards Board (GSSB), this is now open for public comment. This a standard for sustainability and/or ESG reporting that will be applicable for organizations whose primary focus lies in: exploration and extraction; support activities for mining; and supply of specialized products and services to mining organizations. The public comment period will remain open until April 30. Learn more.

 

During the PDAC 2023 convention, the Canadian Diamond Drillers’ Association (CDDA) launched phase one of Bring It To The Surface, a campaign to highlight mental wellness throughout the mining industry. We encourage all members to show their support and stay updated on the campaign by taking the pledge today.
