Free Teacher Resource Kit and In-Service Workshop for Saskatchewan Teachers

With funding from the International Minerals Innovation Institute, a limited number of teacher resource kits for junior grade levels are available to teachers in Saskatchewan during the 2022-2023 academic year. Each kit contains rock and mineral samples, testing equipment, visuals, videos, books, posters, games, maps, and more than 30 lesson plans. Content has been customized for Saskatchewan in consultation with a Saskatchewan-based Indigenous education expert, and also includes educational resources from the Saskatchewan Mining Association. 

Participation in a free in-service workshop is required. However, the Saskatchewan Deeper & Deeper: Discovering Rocks and Minerals is designed to be shared amongst teachers. We welcome and encourage the participation of multiple teachers from a school in this in-service workshop opportunity.

The hands-on workshop will focus on exploring the new Saskatchewan Deeper & Deeper: Discovering Rocks and Minerals teacher resource. Teachers will test the physical properties of minerals, learn how to look for clues in rocks to determine how they were formed, gain a better understanding of the three rock types, explore the rock cycle, and learn about geology and mining in Saskatchewan through hands-on activities that can be reproduced in the classroom. In addition, the workshop will introduce the “Mining Inquiry” resource, developed by the Saskatchewan Mining Association, which weaves Indigenous Ways of Knowing with traditional geoscience.

The workshop will be held in conjunction with the Saskatchewan Mining Association and Simon Fraser University (SFU) Department of Earth Sciences.
