Twenty-six of the top Canadian geoscience post-secondary students were selected to attend the 2019 Student-Industry Mineral Exploration Workshop.
During S‑IMEW 2019, students participated in lectures, presentations and field exercises that gave them insight into exploration techniques and mineral deposits, geophysics, geochemistry, regulatory requirements, environmental sciences, health and safety, corporate social responsibility and much more. They also had the opportunity to tour the Glencore Smelter, visit an active exploration drill site and go on underground mine tours at various Vale mines.
A four-day field trip took the students to Rouyn-Noranda and Val d'Or, Quebec, to explore the geology of those mining camps and parts of the Abitibi Greenstone belt. In Quebec they learned about Noranda geology with Dr. Ross Sherlock and spent a day with El Dorado Lamaque exploring the old Lamaque open pit mine and doing a core logging exercise.
Networking is an important aspect of the workshop and students had the opportunity to meet and mingle with over 90 volunteers from the exploration and mining industry who participated in the workshop.
Alan Coutts, President & CEO, Noront Resources, gave the opening keynote address at the Welcome Reception on May 3 at Dynamic Earth.
We are pleased to have the continued support of Osisko Mining Inc. as the Premier sponsor of the workshop.
