What is value? What is a mining project worth? What are the intangibles that affect the value of a project? Mining valuation is the glue that connects a mining project to the capital markets. A mining valuation may be required for mergers and acquisitions transactions (M&A), private entity, government expropriation, fairness opinions and initial public offerings (IPOs), among others. However, there have been a myriad of valuation techniques utilized within the mining sector and the capital markets, when ascribing a value to exploration, development and production projects. In recent years however, there has been consensus by the leading mining finance countries (Australia, Canada, South Africa, United States, and the United Kingdom) on what are acceptable approaches and methods to assigning a value to a mining project. This session will examine new developments in international valuation standards, valuation of intangibles such as ESG (environmental, social, and governance), valuing of battery metals projects, country risk and “thought leadership” in mining valuation.
