Is the future nuclear? Community and industry perspectives

DATE
Monday, March 6, 2023
LOCATION
Room 715
Small modular nuclear reactors (SMR's) have the potential to dramatically reduce process emissions in the mining sector by providing not only low carbon electricity on site, but also a steady supply of high quality, high temperature heat with no associated CO2 emissions. SMRs can also be deployed off-grid in remote areas, and in many cases can operate for 2 or more years before requiring refueling.

This session will explore the opportunity for SMRs in the mining and resource extraction industry by bringing together technology vendors, representatives from industry who are considering SMRs, and perspective from First Nations.

Discussion will provide context on the current momentum around nuclear power in Canada, including increasing government support and investor appetite. Vendors will describe the value of their designs and discuss how the industry can take advantage of the current momentum around nuclear. Industry will explain why SMRs are particularly suited to mining and resource extraction.
Chair: Christopher Gully, Canadian Nuclear Association, Ottawa, Canada With support from PDAC Sustainability Committee Member: Bill McGuinty, Eastmain Resources Inc.
