Putting into place sound ESG policies and practices is not just important for large, top-tier mining companies. Mid-tier and exploration and development mining companies also have ESG responsibilities that, if started early and managed throughout the early stages of the mining lifecycle, can enhance value and drive quantifiable returns to the organization. The first step in this process is to undertake an ESG screening which identifies material ESG risks and the most accessible opportunities tailored to the company’s operations and geographical presence. This process enables companies to consider action plans aligned with their business goals and objectives and existing risk management systems, to reduce or eliminate ESG risks and capitalize on the identified opportunities. SLR will utilize an example of a gold exploration mining operation in Canada and look at how screening against internationally recognized ESG frameworks and standards and developing ESG action plans can be a straightforward and non-costly exercise that can unlock the ESG value already present within the mining operation.
