METC renewal welcomed—greater action required |
In its 2018 Budget, the Federal Government committed to renewing the Mineral Exploration Tax Credit (METC) for one year. PDAC provided several recommendations for the budget, including a three-year extension of the METC. This recommendation was also made by the House Standing Committee on Finance (FINA) in its report to the Minister of Finance. Although disappointed that it was not included, PDAC will continue to advocate on behalf of the industry for a multi-year METC. Investments in areas such as Indigenous skills training and employment, as well as advancements for women entrepreneurs, were also included in the budget. Learn more  |

Government consultation papers—impact assessment |
|
The Federal Government is seeking input on the development of regulations and policy changes that will accompany the new proposed Impact Assessment Act. It has published consultation papers on: 1. The type of projects that would be subject to impact assessment under the proposed Impact Assessment Act, and 2. Information Requirements and Time Management Regulations. Comments are due to government by April 15. If you would like to share with PDAC comments on any of the questions posed in the Consultation Papers, please email Lesley Williams.

Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) has awarded Innovation Metals Corp. with a research contract for its work on the production of rare-earth-element oxides and alloys. The contract is part of NRCan’s Rare Earth Elements and Chromite Research & Development Program. Learn more

According to S&P Global Market Intelligence for February, equities took a breather after reaching an almost five-year high in January, as aggregate market value of the industry's listed companies (based on 2,466 firms) slipped by 4%. PDAC 2018 Convention Student Program |
|
The Student Program at PDAC 2018 brought together 1,300 students and recent graduates, giving them an opportunity to connect with industry professionals and peers from all over the world.
|
|
|
|
The Student-Industry Networking Luncheon facilitated the recruitment of students for summer work by several industry partners. Eric Thiessen was presented his Mary-Claire Ward Geoscience Award, three WIM Canada awards were presented, and the 2018 S-IMEW students were announced.
The Student-Industry Forum featured a discussion on Innovation in Exploration and Mining that highlighted the use of innovation: from data mining to the use of drones in exploration, robots in mining, and the skills that companies are hiring for.
The Student Geologists’ Guide to the Exploration and Mining Industry was a crash course in preparing graduates to enter the workforce—everything from understanding the business of exploration and mining to contract employment and using your network for job opportunities.
PDAC thanks all the companies, individuals and groups that continue to support the Student Program.
