Financing still on the rise
After an extended period of depressed market activity, junior and intermediate companies are finding increased support from investors since February 2016. According to the SNL Monthly Monitor this is likely the result of rising gold prices. Global drilling activity also rose to a seven-month high in June, made higher by strong growth in the number of active gold projects. Learn more.

METC renewed, CEE changes implemented
PDAC has long advocated for changes to Canadian Exploration Expense (CEE) legislation, and we are pleased to share that Bill C-15 received Royal Assent on June 22. Included in this Bill were two key priorities encouraged by PDAC: renewal of the Mineral Exploration Tax Credit (METC) until March 31, 2017; and changes to legislation so that costs associated with community consultation and environmental studies are considered CEE. Canada’s Innovation Agenda
The Government of Canada is looking for Canadians to share their ideas for putting the country on a firm path to long-term growth across all industries. We encourage PDAC members and stakeholders to help make the mineral exploration and mining industry a priority on the Innovation Agenda. The government is focusing on six action areas during a summer-long period of public engagement that will result in an action plan. Learn more.

Government review of environmental and regulatory processes
The Government of Canada is undertaking a comprehensive review of federal environmental and regulatory processes. This review includes:
  • Reviewing federal environmental assessment processes.
  • Modernizing the National Energy Board.
  • Fisheries Act and the Navigation Protection Act.
An Expert Panel will be established to review federal environmental assessment processes associated with the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, 2012 (CEAA 2012). The Expert Panel will engage broadly with Canadians, Indigenous groups and key stakeholders and develop recommendations to the Minister of Environment and Climate Change related to environmental assessment processes. Input is invited until July 20 on the draft Terms of Reference for the Expert Panel – a document that outlines its proposed mandate, timelines and procedures. You can also provide your input on environmental and regulatory processes through a questionnaire before August 30.
