Get to know PDAC's new President
Following the completion of the PDAC 2016 Convention, the association welcomed Robert (Bob) Schafer to the helm as the 35th President. PDAC staff and our numerous volunteers are excited to work alongside Bob during the next two years, bringing his extensive knowledge of the mineral exploration and development industry to our members. S-IMEW celebrates 10 years
PDAC’s Student-Industry Mineral Exploration Workshop (S-IMEW) provides students with unique access to industry expertise on a wide range of topics that make for well-rounded geoscientists. S-IMEW began in 2007 to encourage careers in mineral exploration and support the overall health of the industry. PDAC is excited to celebrate 10 years of S-IMEW and the many volunteers and sponsors who help make it possible. Learn more. |

Payment reporting tool takes effect
Natural Resources Canada has finalized the tools required for reporting payments made to governments and government officials under the Extractive Sector Transparency Measures Act (ESTMA). ESTMA came into force on June 1, 2015 to deliver on Canada’s international commitments to increase transparency and deter corruption of Canadian companies operating nationally and abroad. Learn more.

A standard for responsible mining
The Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA) released version 2.0 of its Standard for Responsible Mining. A public-review period is open for 60 days, which started on April 5. The IRMA Standard includes health and safety for workers, human rights, community engagement, pollution control, mining in conflict-affected areas, rights of indigenous peoples, transparency in revenue payments from companies to governments, and land reclamation once mining is complete. Mineral exploration outside of Canada
PDAC presented an exploration 101 workshop to mining-focused trade commissioners at its 2016 Convention. The workshop explained the significant role juniors play in making mineral discoveries and the additional benefits they generate for the industry, host nations and Canada. The presentation provided information on risk profiles of an exploration project, including discovery, financial and political risks. Learn more. |

Annual Canadian mineral exploration survey
PDAC and AME BC conduct an annual survey within the mineral exploration and mining industry to gain insight into the health and safety performance of government geological surveys and companies active in exploration for precious and base metals, uranium, diamonds, coal and potash.

Record numbers for Aboriginal Program
More than 500 self-identified Aboriginal attendees were at the PDAC 2016 Convention. The Aboriginal Program attracted more than 700 attendees from the mineral industry, Aboriginal communities, organizations and businesses, governments and academia from Canada and internationally. Held over two days, and with 40 speakers, the Program featured a diverse range of information on Aboriginal affairs and the mineral industry. See the presentations.
