Innovation State of Play
PDAC and Monitor Deloitte released Innovation State of Play in July, a joint report on the state of innovation in the exploration and mining industry. The study found that 81 per cent of innovation in mining falls in the offering types of innovation—how to find, extract and process ore more efficiently and effectively—but for innovation to thrive, mining companies need to create a viable business offering that looks beyond R&D. The report concluded that innovation is critical to the success and growth of the sector at a time when the mining industry is at a crossroads.

Changes to CEE treatment of environmental studies and community consultations
Certain exploration costs associated with community consultation and environmental studies are now classified as Canadian Development Expenses (CDE), instead of Canadian Exploration Expenses (CEE), when they are undertaken for the purpose of securing a right, license or privilege to explore for minerals in a mineral resource in Canada (other than a bituminous sands deposit or an oil shale deposit). This classification restricts such costs from being eligible to be funded from flow-through share proceeds, notwithstanding their direct association with the exploration process.
