PDAC Holds Successful Convention Preview Event in Ottawa
On February 3, PDAC hosted ambassadors, Members of Parliament, Senators, government staff and Ottawa-based industry members at its annual reception in Ottawa. The event celebrated the contributions of the mineral exploration and development industry and previewed the upcoming PDAC 2015 Convention.
|
|
PDAC President Rod Thomas and The Honourable Greg Rickford, Minister of Natural Resources and Minister of the Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario, delivered remarks at the reception. Minister Rickford discussed the importance of the mineral exploration and development industry, the opportunities it provides Canadians and encouraged his colleagues to attend convention. The Minister also spoke to the reputation PDAC enjoys in Ottawa and the willingness of government to continue to work with the PDAC to support the mineral exploration sector.
PDAC looks forward to continuing to build on the success of its annual reception in Ottawa, and to hosting members of government at the upcoming convention. Photos of the event can be viewed here. |

2015 Winner of the Mary-Claire Geoscience Award
This year’s winner of the Mary-Claire Ward Geoscience Award is Jesse Reimink, a PhD student at the Department of Earth Sciences, University of Alberta. His PhD project is focused on early Earth processes as recorded in the ~4.0 billion-year-old Acasta Gneiss Complex in the Northwest Territories.
|
|
Specific questions that are being addressed relate to the nature and tectonic setting of crust formation on the early Earth, as well as secular trends documented within the ~600 million years of magmatism present within the Acasta Gneiss Complex. Jesse will receive his award at the 2015 Joint Assembly to be held May 3 – 7, 2015 in Montreal, QC.
2015 Student-Industry Mineral Exploration Workshop (S-IMEW)
Twenty-six geoscience students from post-secondary institutions across Canada have been selected to participate in the PDAC’s 9th annual Student-Industry Mineral Exploration Workshop (S-IMEW).
The workshop takes place in Sudbury, ON, from May 1 – 15, and includes a four-day field trip to Val d’Or and Noranda, QC. Over the course of the two weeks, industry experts expose students to a wide range of topics, such as geochemistry and geophysics, mineral economics, corporate social responsibility, and Aboriginal participation in mineral exploration. Mapping exercises and mine tours are alsoincluded. Social events and industry presence are important components of the workshop to help students make connections and practice their networking skills.
PDAC relies on industry support and sponsorship to help continue to host this important educational workshop for the future of the industry. View all sponsorship opportunities on the website.
