Government establishes Canadian Ombudsperson for Responsible Enterprise

The Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of International Trade, announced the creation of the Canadian Ombudsperson for Responsible Enterprise (CORE), as well as the establishment of a multi-stakeholder Advisory Body to advise the Government and the CORE on responsible business conduct abroad. Finance Standing Committee report recommends 3-year METC

On December 8, the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance released its report of recommendations for consideration by the Minister of Finance for the 2018 federal budget. The Committee’s report includes the recommendation to “Facilitate decision-making in the mineral sector by renewing the Mineral Exploration Tax Credit for a three-year period”. PDAC has been advocating for a number of key priorities to enhance the mineral industry’s competitiveness, including maintaining the flow-through share regime and renewal of the Mineral Exploration Tax Credit (METC) for a minimum three years. NRCan accepting applications for TGI Program

Natural Resources Canada is searching for research scientists to apply to their Research Affiliate Program (RAP) as it relates to federal Targeted Geoscience Initiative (TGI) programming. Applications from bachelor, masters and doctorate students will be accepted. Possible roles for applicants includes field and lab work. Learn more

New tool helps collect and share data

PDAC’s Exploration Assessment Digital Data Formats (EADDF) guidelines are a way to help improve discovery rates of mineral exploration in Canada. The guidelines propose a uniform national standard for digital data submission for jurisdictional mine recording offices. While each jurisdiction has its own formatting requirements there are few for data that is submitted in digital form. Learn more

Industry projections 2018

Last year marked the beginning of a sustainable recovery in the mineral sector. Looking forward, six top executives from leading mining companies provided their views on 2018 to BNN. With depleting reserves top of mind, they expect more focus on exploration and inter-company collaboration to develop assets. But opinion is split on whether miners will be able to grow, or even maintain production, without letting the hard-won cost discipline of past years fly out the window. Learn more

Big mining's surge in value

Big cap diversified miners are riding a wave of optimism as global growth prospects – especially in manufacturing – continue to strengthen. The manufacturing index has now signalled expansion for a record 82 months in a row. Copper, zinc, nickel, iron ore and other key commodities have completed an impressive recovery from the lows of January 2016. The bullishness is even more evident in share prices of sector heavyweights with investors piling into stocks that were decimated at the bottom of the cycle. Learn more

Copper price powers on

The price of copper ended 2017 near a four-year high of US$3.30 a pound (US$7,260 per tonne) extending the red metals “bull run” for a second year. Measured from its multi-year lows struck at the beginning of 2016, copper has gained more than 70% in value, due to recovery in economic activity. Learn more

The Ministry of Labour in Ontario is conducting outreach to mining stakeholders to help shape the future direction of its occupational health and safety enforcement strategy. PDAC 2018 Convention Travel Funding

PDAC has set up a Convention Travel Fund to help student groups cover the costs of getting to Toronto for its annual convention. Funding is allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. The deadline to apply for funding is February 2. Learn more about the Student Program and apply online.
