Exploration labour market survey
If you work in or employ people who work in mineral exploration, take the Canadian Mineral Exploration Labour Market Survey developed by PDAC, the Mining Industry Human Resources Council, and other stakeholder groups. The survey will help identify and address human resource and labour market issues facing the exploration sector and assist in finding ways to stimulate a proactive approach to addressing its challenges. Results will be documented in a report to better understand the mineral exploration labour market conditions.

Advocacy

A budget that supports our sector
Rumblings were heard across the country following the 2017 federal budget – just like every budget before it! But from the standpoint of PDAC the 2017 budget justly supports the Canadian mineral exploration and mining sector. In his latest blog, Executive Director Andrew Cheatle talks about PDAC’s successful recommendations to the federal government to help benefit our members and the wider industry. Read the blog.

Bringing international mining together
PDAC and the World Economic Forum co-hosted the second annual International Mines Ministers Summit (IMMS) on March 6. The Summit brought together an impressive 25 ministers responsible for mining from around the word. This event provides an important setting for the global mining community to explore challenges and opportunities affecting the industry. This year’s IMMS—held during the PDAC 2017 Convention—focused on innovation in the mining industry and the clean innovation agenda. The Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development prepared a report of the Summit, The Innovation Imperative in the Mining Sector. Get the report

Consultation on Canada-MERCOSUR Free Trade Agreement
On April 29, the Government of Canada launched public consultations on a possible Free Trade Agreement between Canada and MERCOSUR (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay). Public consultations seek the views of Canadians to help define Canada’s interests, including where such an agreement could provide opportunities to create prosperity for Canadians. For more information and to provide comments visit the Canada-MERCOSUR FTA Consultation website.

Carbon pricing concern in the North
The NWT & Yukon Chamber of Mines publicly announced its support for the Premiers of NWT and Nunavut in their appeals to the Government of Canada to seriously consider the circumstances of the northern minerals industry before imposing a price on carbon. NWT Premier Bob McLeod and Nunavut Premier Peter Taptuna expressed their hopes that the move to price carbon would recognize the unique situation of the North and include investment in viable alternatives to diesel for people and companies living and working in the territories. Capital Markets

Exploration market finance update
The number of financings by junior and intermediate companies fell sharply in April, dropping to 158 from 235 the previous month. However, the $1.68 billion raised was up 70% from $989 million in March, representing the second-highest amount raised since July 2014. Learn more.

Outlook improves after initial gold resources at 5-year low
According to S&P Global Market Intelligence, while global initial gold resources hit a five year low, an improvement is predicted as 2017 progresses due to increased exploration since mid-2016. Over the past five years, Canada has ranked highest for gold in initial resources, with about 22% of the new gold found during the period, followed by the U.S. (11%) and Australia (8%). Learn more
