Where the world’s mineral and finance industry meets |
The world’s mineral exploration and mining community is preparing to gather in Toronto from March 5 to 8 for the annual PDAC 2017 Convention. Last year more than 22,000 attendees from 125 countries were represented. In a new, short video, PDAC Executive Director Andrew Cheatle explains the importance of the PDAC Convention, how it brings industry together each year, and why skipping it is not an option! New CEE guidelines |
In 2016, PDAC achieved a significant advocacy win when the Government of Canada agreed to treat certain costs related to environmental studies and community consultation as Canadian Exploration Expenses (CEE). On January 24, 2017 the Canada Revenue Agency revised its administrative guidelines as outlined in a blog post from Bennett Jones. Learn more.

A financial snapshot of the industry |
|
There were positive signs for the industry in the second half of 2016, with most analysts predicting stable or higher metals prices throughout 2017, according to the S&P Global Industry Monitor. In January 2017, the aggregate market cap of the industry’s Top 100 companies rose 15% to $1.47 trillion from $1.28 trillion. Global drilling activity also surged, with the highest number of distinct projects (232) reported since January 2014. Yet financing for exploration fell to $440 million (137 transactions) from $777 million (248 transactions) in December 2016. Learn more. |

PDAC escorts Minister Carr to Mexico |
|
Glenn Mullan, PDAC President was invited by Canada’s Natural Resources Minister Jim Carr (pictured) on his recent visit to Mexico. Following the visit, the North American Energy Ministers Meeting was held in Winnipeg, where Carr signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Mexico’s Economy Minister Ildefonso Guajardo Villarreal. The MoU will cover geoscience, clean innovation and corporate social responsibility, and will promote sharing best practices in water management and the use of renewable energy. Minister Carr is attending the PDAC Convention for the second consecutive year. Learn more. |

Bringing Aboriginal communities and industry together |
|
A highlight of the PDAC Convention is the Aboriginal Program, which provides an important platform for fostering cooperative, respectful and mutually-beneficial relationships between Aboriginal communities and industry. It is a unique event where emerging issues can be discussed in order to fuel a successful mineral industry in Canada, while generating important opportunities for Aboriginal people. |

Mining and metals, an economy booster |
|
The Advisory Council on Economic Growth recommended several actions to the Government of Canada that will benefit the Canadian economy. Developing a national infrastructure strategy was one of the actions, with the mining and metals sector identified as having significant untapped potential requiring focus and attention. PDAC has advocated for investment in infrastructure, particularly in remote and northern Canada where mineral exploration and mining costs are significantly higher. Learn more. |

Clean energy resources projects map |
|
Natural Resources Canada released its second edition of the Map of Clean Energy Resources and Projects (CERP) in Canada. Seven new layers were added: exploring Canada’s biomass, geothermal and uranium resource potential, as well as clean technology incubators and accelerators, upcoming major clean energy projects, nuclear stations and geothermal heating facilities in Canada. The CERP map has also been updated to show clean energy test centres and energy generating stations for hydro, tidal, wind and solar. Learn more. |

Mary-Claire Ward Geoscience Award |
|
Holly Steenkamp of Laval University is the 2017 recipient for her PhD thesis involving new regional bedrock mapping in an underexplored part of the south-central Rae craton, in the Tehery Lake–Wager Bay area of northwestern Hudson’s Bay, Nunavut. Holly is determining the areas regional tectonometamorphic history as recorded by supracrustal rocks. She will use results to evaluate the character, timing, and duration of metamorphic processes associated with the 1.86-1.83 Ga Trans-Hudson orogeny. Learn more. |

S-IMEW 2017 participants announced |
|
Twenty-five geoscience students from post-secondary institutions across Canada have been selected to participate in the PDAC’s 11th annual Student-Industry Mineral Exploration Workshop (S-IMEW). From May 4-19, industry experts expose students to a wide range of topics such as geochemistry and geophysics, mineral economics, corporate social responsibility, and Aboriginal participation in mineral exploration.
