Bearing the torch as President of PDAC

Jun 29, 2016

I would like to start my first blog post by saying how proud I am to be the 35th President of the PDAC, and to be part of such a renowned organization that is so widely respected across the world. The transition comes with some high expectations—not only because of the challenges that lie ahead for Canada’s mineral exploration and development industry—but also because I’m trying to fill the very large shoes left behind by outgoing President Rod Thomas.

Having always believed in the importance of volunteering, PDAC was the obvious choice for funneling my passion of the mineral exploration and mining sector. In 1996, I attended my very first PDAC Convention and joined the association as a volunteer around the same time. The following year I was on the convention lineup as a presenter. I have remained an energetic and active participant over the years, serving in numerous capacities on a variety of committees, such as Awards, Convention Planning, Executive, Geosciences, Health & Safety, International Affairs, and Nominating.

Like all before me, I step into the two-year position of PDAC President with fresh energy and ideas. My attention will be focussed on the following three objectives during my tenure:

  • Continuation of the Mineral Exploration Tax Credit (METC).
  • Improving infrastructure, especially in the north, where remoteness comes with significantly higher operational costs.
  • Continuing to promote responsible exploration, through the workshops and sessions available at our Convention and by enhancing our world-leading guidance on responsible exploration, e3 Plus.

PDAC has a broad mandate, which means staying up-to-date about many different aspects of the industry. Thankfully, I am supported by a team of staff who rank among the best in terms of expertise insight, energy and a commitment to further enhance and expand the importance of our sector in the prosperity of all Canadians.

While still relatively new to the role of PDAC President, I have fully enjoyed my time so far and look forward to continuing to be the voice of Canada’s mineral exploration and development industry for our members.
