PDAC Introduces Students to Real World of Mineral Exploration
This coming May, some 25 senior earth science students from across Canada will converge on the Greater Sudbury area for the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada’s annual Student-Industry Mineral Exploration Workshop.

The two-week, all expenses-paid gathering, which runs from May 8 to May 22, will give the students, hand-picked from post secondary institutions across the country, an opportunity to experience the many facets of the mineral exploration industry, and to polish their networking skills.

According to Scott Jobin-Bevans, co-chair of the PDAC’s human resources development committee, which is organizing the workshop, “We design this event to attract students into the mineral exploration industry and to give them a technical and business perspective of mineral exploration that is not usually found in the classroom. We have run two workshops to date. Both have been very successful and the participating students have been incredibly enthusiastic. While it’s still too early to tell, of course, I predict that some of our future industry leaders will come out of these workshops.”

Students participate in an intensive agenda of workshop sessions chaired by industry leaders, field activities that include mine site visits, and dinners and networking events with industry members.

Topics covered during the two weeks include career opportunities in the mineral exploration industry, geological mapping, health and safety, sustainability and the public markets.

Students take field trips outside Sudbury to world-class mining and mineral camps (Val d’Or, Rouyn-Noranda, Cobalt), and have exposure to the Sudbury Basin and the numerous mines of the nickel camp.

The program is being developed now. More than ever the organizers are looking to industry to sponsor this event and support the students, this country’s future geoscientists. Excellent sponsorship opportunities exist.

Industry members are also invited to participate in the workshop, either by attending the social events to meet the students or by giving an address to the students.
