The Mary-Claire Ward Geoscience Award was created to honour the memory of Mrs. Ward. The intent of the award is to encourage and support a graduate student in Canada whose thesis is likely to increase our knowledge of the geological history of Canada through mapping.

Mary-Claire Ward Geoscience Award
Awarded annually to a graduate student at a Canadian university whose thesis incorporates geoscience mapping as a significant component.

Application deadline: December 15.
Amount of award: $5,000

Applications will become available in Fall 2012.

The Mary-Claire Ward Geoscience Award honours the many contributions to the Canadian geoscience community of Mary-Claire Ward who was president of Watts, Griffis and McOuat Limited, a past president of the Geological Association of Canada and long-serving chair of the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada's Geoscience Committee.

The award, which consists of a $5,000 cash award and certificate, was created by the many colleagues of Mary-Claire and organized through a coalition of the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC), Canadian Geological Foundation, Geological Association of Canada (GAC®), National Geological Surveys Committee (NGSC) and Watts, Griffis and McOuat Limited (WGM) with financial administration provided by the Canadian Geological Foundation.

Mary-Claire was a passionate advocate for the geoscience mapping of Canada. Mary-Claire died in April 2004. The objective of the award is to encourage and support a graduate student in Canada whose thesis embodies the concept of increasing our knowledge of the geological history of Canada through mapping. The thesis will meet this requirement by incorporating mapping as a significant component.

The name of each award winner and the year of the award are displayed on a plaque which is permanently located in the offices of Watts, Griffis and McOuat Limited.
