CELEBRATING THE 10TH ANNUAL STUDENT-INDUSTRY MINERAL EXPLORATION WORKSHOP (S-IMEW) IN 2016
As the program approaches its 10th anniversary, an amazing 225 students have attended the two-week workshop held in northeastern Ontario and western Quebec since its inception in 2007.
From May 6-20, 2016, twenty-six senior geosciences students from across Canada will converge on the Greater Sudbury area for the PDAC's annual Student-Industry Mineral Exploration Workshop (S-IMEW). The two-week, all expenses-paid gathering will give the students, hand-picked from post secondary institutions across the country, an opportunity to experience the many facets of the mineral exploration industry.
Scott Jobin-Bevans, PDAC past president and co-founder of the workshop, says “the event is designed to attract students to the mineral exploration industry and to give them a practical and business perspective of mineral exploration not generally available in the classroom. This country is a world leader in mineral exploration. If we are to retain this predominant position, we must do everything we can to encourage highly qualified young people to enter the industry. The students attending this workshop are our future leaders.”
Students will participate in lectures, presentations, and hands-on sessions that will include exploration and mapping techniques, mineral deposits, geophysics, geochemistry, regulatory requirements, health and safety and corporate social responsibility and more.
During the second week of the workshop the students will embark on a four-day field trip to the Abitibi Greenstone Belt which will include a tour and overview of tour of the Noranda camp in Quebec and the Timmins gold camp in Ontario.
Students have the opportunity to engage with industry professionals every evening and at open networking events such as the Welcome Reception and the Grillin' and Drillin' Closing BBQ.
