Student Activities At PDAC Convention 2012

The 2012 PDAC convention experienced record breaking numbers this year as student delegate attendance hit a new high of 1680 students – surpassing last year’s record of 1100.

The student-industry networking luncheon, sponsored by Newmont, saw an increase in both student and industry attendance, with over 900 people in the room. The luncheon is the biggest student event at the Convention that allows students and recent graduates the opportunity to network with industry professionals.

A new addition to the student program this year, the student-industry networking forum, filled the room with over 150 students who gathered to hear various industry professionals, including the keynote speaker, Dr. Anthony Hodge, President of the ICMM, share their personal experiences and pearls of wisdom to those embarking on a career in the geosciences.

At the Convention this year we also noted increased industry interest in students; Vale was the first sponsor of the student program, Newmont returned as the sponsor of the student-industry networking luncheon and there was more interest from industry representatives to participate in student events such as the guided tours of the investors exchange and trade show.

With increased numbers of students attending the Convention, the PDAC also provided more travel funding this year to help 564 students cover the costs of their travel to Toronto. For some student groups, such as the DM Kent Club from the University of Regina, it was their first time at the PDAC Convention and their experience was a very positive one, as mentioned in the report.

This year’s lucky recipients of the PDAC Tuition Top Awards were:
Andrew Nette, Chad Hebert, Devi Shantilal, Don Brunatti, Ellen Hachborn, France Belley, Joshua Pol, Mariella Nalepa, Michelle McKeough and Taro Chris-Iwuru.
