High Frequency Trading and the Junior Resource Industry

You are invited to attend a special session sponsored by the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada Securities Committee on high frequency trading (“HFT”).  The Committee has recognized the need to deepen its understanding of the issue surrounding HFT to facilitate dialogue and analysis.

In recent months, the PDAC Securities Committee has noted media/newsletter discussions of the impacts of HFT on the financial resilience and health of the mineral exploration industry. The issue was also raised by a number of participants in the cross-country consultation on Securities Regulatory Reform conducted by the Securities Committee earlier this year.

We received feedback suggesting that while HFTs provide benefits for traders in high volume stocks the junior resource industry may be negatively affected by the presence of HFTs in a number of ways including the ability to raise equity, maintain share prices, issue debt and achieve sustainable commodity pricing.

The session is designed to educate PDAC members on the technical aspects of HFT and to elicit comments from participants on how it impacts their companies. We have put together an expert panel to explain what HFT is, how and how it works. The seminar will review current HFT practices and provide a summary its general benefits and potentially negative effects on mining and exploration companies.

Our speakers will provide their views on the pros and cons of HFT as well as an analysis of how it impacts the mineral exploration industry specifically (with its dependence on raising capital through stock markets, and its desire for liquidity).

We invite you to join us at the Royal York Hotel on September 30th to provide your input to this important dialogue.
