Memorandum of Understanding – PDAC and
Assembly of First Nations
Thank you to those members who responded to our call for comments on the
draft memorandum of understanding between the association and the
Assembly of First Nations. The MOU was signed on Tuesday, March 4 by AFN
National Chief Phil Fontaine and PDAC President Patricia Dillon. A full
version of the MOU is
here.

Relationship building between First
Nations and the mining industry is key
Speaking at a CIM Sudbury branch meeting on April 18, Glenn Nolan, PDAC
second vice-president, advocates that exploration and mining companies
build relationships with First Nation communities. This foundation will
serve companies well as a project evolves. “There may still be
grievances down the road,” he said, “but because you have a relationship
that’s been built, it’s easier to resolve these differences.”

report of Nolan’s address.

Manitoba establishes a Crown-Aboriginal
consultation unit
A newly created Crown-Aboriginal consultation unit, announced recently
by the Manitoba government, will “facilitate Crown-Aboriginal
consultations for the provincial government on proposed large-scale
projects.” The unit will also develop a government strategy on
Crown-Aboriginal consultations and provide education and training on
consultation policy and guidelines to government departments and First
Nations and Métis communities. Click here
for news release.

Health and safety committee organizes
wilderness first aid courses
The first of three wilderness first aid courses, organized by the PDAC’s
health and safety committee and the Ontario Prospectors Association, was
held this past weekend (April 19 and 20) in Thunder Bay. Fourteen people
participated in the two-day course, which was given by Sirius Wilderness
Medicine. The other two courses will be held in Sudbury during the week
of May 20. While these courses are fully subscribed, we would like to
hear from people interested in registering for further courses. We plan
to offer more, depending on demand. Please contact
Saley Lawton.

PDAC launches third annual e3 photograph
contest
If you’re taking photographs on your business travels, why not submit
some for this year’s e3 photograph contest? We are looking for
photographs that demonstrate the environmental and community engagement
aspects of mineral exploration worldwide. The connection with mineral
exploration should be clear from the photograph. First, second and third
prizes may be given in each of the main categories: community engagement
and environmental. The overall winner for the best photograph submitted
will receive a one-ounce gold coin. Deadline for submitting your
photographs is the end of the day, Friday, May 30. For more information
and a contest entry form,

Marketing opportunity to support PDAC Mining
Matters
Members are invited to promote their companies and support resource
education for young people by donating to a silent auction, to be held
in conjunction with the second annual golf tournament of PDAC Mining
Matters. This educational arm of the PDAC develops and delivers
classroom resources to teach students about earth sciences and the
Canadian mining industry. The fundraising goal for this year’s
tournament, to be held on June 5, is $50,000. A list of suggested
donations and how to donate them is contained in this
information
sheet. Golf tournament Names of donors will be listed on the Mining
Matters website, and donations valued at $100 or more will be included
in the tournament program. Corporate giveaways for golfer grab bags are
also welcome.

Data on mineral tenure in Canada
Hidden deep in the recesses of the website of the Ontario Ministry of
Northern Development and Mines is an excellent resource about mineral
tenure in all Canadian jurisdictions. The information, in spreadsheet
format, is compiled by the provincial/territorial mining rights
committee. There are four tables covering elements of mining rights
legislation dealing with obtaining and maintaining mining rights. The
data are current as of December 1, 2006. While the site contains a
caveat that the information contained in the tables is not a substitute
for actual legislation, this is an excellent guide to the requirements
for acquiring and securing mineral tenure. Go to this
website and cursor down the lefthand menu until you reach a section
entitled Provincial-Territorial Charts.
