PDAC Convention
2008
Plans are well advanced for PDAC Convention 2008. Members will be
receiving full convention information and registration details in the
mail around mid-December, and copies will also be distributed in the
December 10 edition of the Northern Miner. The planning committee has
put together a very full and comprehensive program designed for as many
interests and tastes as possible, and we think that convention delegates
and exhibitors will enjoy the new, larger quarters of the south building
of the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. Convention details and online
registration are available
here.

PDAC Caracle Cup hockey tournament ●
March 1 ● Toronto
The first annual PDAC Caracle Cup hockey tournament will be held on the
Saturday before PDAC Convention 2008 at the Ice Gardens Complex,
Toronto. The round-robin tournament, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., will include
six teams, each with 10 players and a goalie. Whatever their skill
level, players are invited to sign up their team to compete for the
Caracle Cup. Proceeds from this event will support students and their
education in the geosciences through donations to Mining Matters and the
PDAC Student-Industry Mineral Exploration Workshop. A sign-up sheet with
more details is
here.

Mining Day on the Hill
On Tuesday, November 20, a PDAC team of staff and volunteers joined
Mining Association of Canada, company, and other association
representatives for Mining Day on the Hill in Ottawa. Members of the
PDAC team included president Patricia Dillon, vice-presidents Jon Baird
and Scott Jobin-Bevans, and directors Don Bubar and Eira Thomas. Staff
representatives were Tony Andrews, executive director, and Philip
Bousquet, director of sustainability. Mining Day on the Hill is a key
element of MAC’s Mining Works for Canada program. This year’s theme was
aboriginal participation in mining. Some 70 mining representatives were
organized into 13 teams and met with approximately 70 federal government
decision-makers. Among the highlights were an address by AFN National
Chief Phil Fontaine and a statement
in the House of Commons attesting to the value of mining to Canada by
David Anderson, parliamentary secretary to the federal minister of
Natural Resources Canada.

Advocacy mission to Ottawa
The PDAC organized a mission to Parliament Hill on November 26 and 27 to
advocate for funding for geoscience mapping, the continuation of the
super flow-through program, and the need for securities regulatory
reform. The objective was also to provide information and increase
awareness about Canada’s exploration industry and to bring attention to
aboriginal issues. Participants in the mission included directors Lynda
Bloom and Glenn Nolan; Denise Lockett, Rob Whittall, and Raziel Zisman
who are members of the aboriginal affairs, financial and taxation, and
securities committees respectively, and MaryAnn Mihychuk. Meetings were
held with 13 Members of Parliament, four senior department officials,
one senator, and five political assistants.

Nominations invited for the PDAC’s
new aboriginal award
The association is inviting nominations for its new aboriginal award,
the Skookum Jim Award. Named after the aboriginal leader of the group
that discovered the first gold in the Klondike, the award has been
created to recognize aboriginal participation in the mineral industry.
Recipients of the award will have demonstrated exceptional achievement
and/or service in a Canadian aboriginal-run service business for the
Canadian mining industry or a Canadian aboriginal exploration or mining
company, or have made a significant individual contribution to the
mining industry. The first Skookum Jim Award will be presented at the
association’s 2008 awards evening on Monday, March 3. Deadline for
nominations is December 31.

Deadline for nominations to
board of directors is December 14
Members are reminded that the deadline for nominations to the PDAC’s
board of directors is Friday, December 14. The board is responsible for
the overall governance and stewardship of the association and for
approving the PDAC’s position and policy on all major issues affecting
the industry. Each nomination must be supported by six PDAC members in
good standing and each nominated candidate must be a PDAC member in good
standing who has consented in writing to serve as a director. There are
seven board meetings a year and directors have the option of
participating in the meeting in person or by telephone.

full details and nominating guidelines.

Reminder to graduate students
applying for the Mary-Claire Ward Geoscience Award
Another deadline! Graduate students applying for the 2008 Mary-Claire
Ward Geoscience Award are reminded that applications are due in to the
PDAC by no later than December 15. If this deadline is a problem, please
contact Saley Lawton
as soon as possible. The award is presented annually to a graduate
student at a Canadian university whose thesis incorporates geoscience
mapping as a significant component. The winning student receives a
$3,000 cash award and certificate and has the choice of receiving
her/his award at the PDAC convention or the annual meeting of the
Geological Association of Canada. Travel and accommodation expenses are
covered by the appropriate organization.

Health and safety report now
available
The second health and safety report of mineral exploration companies
with projects in Canada is now available. The publication reports the
findings of a survey that the PDAC conducts in partnership with the
Association for Mineral Exploration British Columbia. An electronic
version is
here. Please contact
Teresa Barrett if
you would like hard copies.
The report’s findings have been picked up recently
by media. CBC Sudbury interviewed health and safety committee chairman
Bill Mercer on November 27, and the Northern Miner published a summary
of the survey results in its December 3-9 issue.
