PDAC submits brief to
Canada’s mines ministers
In its brief to this year’s annual meeting of Canadian mines ministers,
the PDAC is submitting a series of recommendations on topics that form
the underpinnings of the investment climate for the mineral industry in
Canada. These include a high-quality geoscience database, a competitive
tax policy, an efficient regulatory regime, and a strategic approach to
promoting Canada’s advantages and expertise. PDAC President Patricia
Dillon will be presenting the brief to ministers in September. The
meeting will be held in Whistler, British Columbia.

This is the fifth in a series of once-a-decade meetings organized by the
Canadian mineral exploration community. The event, to be held at the
Fairmont Royal York Hotel, Toronto, from September 9 to 12, has
exploration technology as its principal focus. Highlights include:
strategic updates from world experts in the fields of geochemistry,
geophysics, remote sensing and data processing and visualization; access
to a state-of-the-art 3D theatre featuring 20 ‘real world’ examples;
poster displays; day-long session assessing major exploration deposit
models and exploration techniques; workshops in geochemistry,
geophysics, data analysis, GIS, remote sensing and airborne best
practices; and trade show.
Full details.

ICMM launches REACH Metals Gateway
REACH is a European Community regulation on chemicals and their safe
use. It deals with the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization
and Restriction of Chemical substances. The new law came
into force on June 1, 2007. According to the International Council on
Mining and Metals (ICMM), “the new program reverses the common premise
that it is the role of regulators to prove that a product may be harmful
and instead places the burden of proof (of safety) onto industry.
Manufacturers and importers are required to gather information on the
properties of the substances they use and produce and to register this
in a central database. Depending on the risk characterization of a
material or chemical, authorization may then be required before it can
be used or produced.” ICMM has set up a REACH gateway to assist
producers and downstream users comply with the new legislation.

Gateway.
