PDAC publication on corporate social
responsibility resources for exploration companies
The PDAC has published Sustainable Development and Corporate Social
Responsibility: Tools, codes and standards for the mineral exploration
industry. This 20-page publication, which is available in hard copy
and pdf formats, contains summaries of 36 resources that have been
produced over the last 25 years by various international organizations and
associations on the topics of sustainable development and corporate
social responsibility. The PDAC is providing this publication as a
service to its members and to the industry generally. Hard copies of the
publication will be mailed to all members. Click here for more
information and to download the publication in pdf format.

UNB doctoral student wins 2007 Mary-Claire Ward Geoscience Award
Winner of this year’s Mary-Claire Ward Geoscience Award is Andrew C.
Parmenter, a doctoral student at the University of New Brunswick.
Andrew’s research project, The structure of the Cranberry Mountain
region of the Thor-Odin dome, Monashee Complex, and its bearing on the
tectonic evolution of the Canadian Cordillera in southeast British
Columbia, won him the $3,000 cash award and certificate, both of
which will be presented at the student-industry networking luncheon on
Tuesday, March 6, during PDAC Convention 2007.
Details here.

Convention 2007: Celebrating the PDAC’s 75th anniversary
This year marks the diamond or 75th anniversary of the PDAC. One of the
commemorative events planned is the screening of the movie Let Me
Call You Sweetheart, documenting the life and times of the PDAC’s
longest serving president, Viola MacMillan (1944-64). The movie, which
has been broadcast a number of times on national television, uses some
of Mrs. MacMillan’s own film footage to tell her life story and record
her prospecting and mining career. Just as fascinating is the visual
history of Canadian mining in the 1930s and 40s. The movie will be shown
on Monday, March 6 from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the John Bassett Theatre at
the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

Convention 2007: Your window on the world
Delegates attending the PDAC convention are given a great chance to
learn about opportunities and developments in other parts of the world.
The country presentation rooms, which are open for the duration of the
convention, are well worth a visit. Country nationals will be eager to
talk to delegates about the investment climate, geology, mining
legislation and other aspects of their respective jurisdictions.
Countries represented this year include Angola, Australia, Brazil,
Colombia, and India. Full details
here.

Convention 2007: CD-ROM free with delegate registration!
I wanted to hear a paper but wasn’t able to get there in time. The
two sessions I wanted to attend were on at the same time. Why do
delegates have to pay extra for a CD-ROM of the technical sessions?
Just a few of the comments we have received after previous conventions.
Well, we listened and this year we are giving all delegates with full
registrations a free CD-ROM of the main and open technical sessions. The
CD-ROM includes the speakers’ oral presentations together with their
PowerPoint presentations (so you can hear and watch at the same time).
The CD-ROM will be mailed after the convention. For a
demonstration,

Convention 2007: Affiliated events
Because the PDAC’s annual convention is such a major attraction and
thousands attend, the event is seen as a good opportunity by other
organizations and companies to arrange meetings, workshops, seminars and
other events. As a service to their organizers, we try to list as many
of these affiliated events as possible. Go to the foot of
this page and you
will see some of them. Please send an email to
info@pdac.ca if you would like an
event added.

Corporate governance workshop, Wednesday, March 7
A workshop on corporate governance guidelines, audit committee
requirements, and disclosure requirements for public companies will be
held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 7, at the offices of
Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP. The workshop is free but registration is
required. Details
here.

AFN National Chief Phil Fontaine commends PDAC for resource
revenue sharing study
In a recent address on the need to solve First Nations’ poverty in
Canada, Assembly of First Nations National Chief Phil Fontaine referred
to the PDAC’s
discussion paper on resource revenue sharing. Speaking to business
leaders at the Economic Club of Toronto, National Chief Fontaine noted
the importance of the resource industry in providing opportunities for
First Nations employment, investment and business development. He quoted
from the PDAC’s paper as follows, “sharing of the public revenues would
increase the political stability and economic predictability that
support long-term investment,” then said, “That sounds like a win-win to
me… and it comes from the corporate community.” Click here for a full copy of
National Chief Fontaine’s text.

Aboriginal Affairs Committee chairman participates in TVOntario debate on native poverty
