Seven excellent workshops offered at this year’s convention
Metallogeny of the circum-Arctic, drilling 101, geophysics and corporate
social responsibility are just a few of the topics covered by the short
courses and workshops taking place at this year’s convention. For
detailed course descriptions,

It is worth noting that the Association of
Professional Geoscientists of Ontario (APGO) supports participation by
its members in these courses as acceptable continuing professional
development activities. Spaces are limited. Register before
February 5 to receive the lowest fees.

Members and convention delegates will receive 75th anniversary
publication
Many of you will probably have seen the PDAC 75th anniversary
publication which was distributed with a recent edition of the Northern
Miner. The association will be distributing copies to all convention
delegates in March. Members not attending the convention will receive
their copies by mail after the convention. Here are a few of the
comments we’ve received about the publication:
-
The book was a great chronicle of events, and
sure brought a wash of great memories over me. Thanks for that!
-
What a GREAT magazine -- a real keeper.
-
What a fabulous, informative and entertaining
magazine for our 75th anniversary. I just spent the last
couple of hours scanning it and look forward to getting into the
meat of the book. So many stories, memories and familiar faces
should make this one of the top reads this year in the industry.

Annual N. B. Keevil Memorial Hockey Game
This year’s N. B. Keevil Memorial Hockey Game (the 17th) will be played
at the Varsity Centre (Arena) 299 Bloor St. West, Toronto, on Sunday,
March 4 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Members interested in playing should
contact coach Bruce Reid at
breid@us-silver.com. Thanks to Jim Priest for providing this
information.

Spring advocacy campaign
The PDAC is planning a spring advocacy campaign in anticipation of the
upcoming federal budget. Volunteers are being asked to visit their MPs
in their local constituency offices and to discuss the need for
extending the ‘super’ flow-through program, funding for the Cooperative
Geological Mapping Strategies, and updating the definitions of Canadian
Exploration Expense. For more information, contact
MaryAnn Mihychuk,
director, regulatory affairs.

Student-industry mineral exploration workshop – Sudbury, Ontario
- May 2007
The first PDAC student-industry workshop will be held at Laurentian
University, Sudbury, Ontario, from May 6-18. The top 20 third or fourth
year Canadian geoscience post-secondary students will be selected to
attend this workshop, all expenses paid. Organized by the student
affairs committee, the workshop aims to educate students about the wide
variety of careers in the industry and the adventure of being a
geoscientist through lectures, presentations, hands-on courses and field
trips to Timmins and Rouyn-Noranda. The PDAC is the major financial
supporter of this workshop. However, industry is invited to contribute
funds to ensure the success and sustainability of the workshop, which
will be held every year. Many thanks to contributors to date, including:
Barrick Gold Corporation; Adanac Molybdenum Corporation; Anglo American
Exploration (Canada) Ltd.
