Professional liability
insurance program for geological consultants
The PDAC is pleased to announce that a new insurance program for
independent geological consultants, from sole practitioners to
professional consulting firms, will be introduced, starting February 1,
2007. The program is designed exclusively for PDAC members. The new
program will include comprehensive, affordable errors & omissions
liability and property insurance for geoscientists. It will be offered
through Partners Indemnity Insurance Brokers in partnership with Chubb
Insurance and Echelon General Insurance Company. The insurance program
will cover: professional errors & omissions; commercial general legal
liability; property and transit insurance; directors’ & officers’
liability; kidnap and ransom; non-owned aircraft; and special event
insurance. Full details of the insurance will be posted on the PDAC’s
website, www.pdac.ca, in January 2007.
Thanks to second vice president, Scott Jobin-Bevans, for organizing this
new program for members.

Did you receive your
calendar?
By now, all members should have received a 15-month calendar
containing a collection of Jim Kelly’s cartoons. The calendar is just
one of the ways in which the association is celebrating its 75th
anniversary (watch for others!). Additional copies of the calendar are
available for $5.00 each. To order, please send a request to
info@pdac.ca.

Mining Day on the Hill
On November 21, president Patricia Dillon, past president Peter
Dimmell and director of regulatory affairs MaryAnn Mihychuk participated
in Mining Day On The Hill, one of the key lobbying events of Mining
Works for Canada. Teams of industry representatives talked to senior
officials and MPs in a series of pre-arranged meetings on a range of
topics, including the need for regulatory reform and measures to reverse
Canada’s declining base metal reserves. During the event, Gary Lunn,
federal minister of natural resources, offered positive support for
streamlining regulations and geological mapping.

Vancouver workshop on
corporate governance issues
The PDAC is one of the sponsors of a workshop on corporate
governance guidelines, audit committee requirements, and disclosure
requirements for public companies, to be held on February 1, 2007, in
Vancouver. There is no fee for the workshop, but registration is
required. Full details.

Fisheries issues
The PDAC has drafted four operational statements for low-risk
activities: dock construction and removal; bridge construction and
removal; camp setup and teardown; and trenching. These have been
submitted to Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) and once they have been
approved by that agency, there will be no need for explorationists to
seek approval from DFO for these particular activities. A fifth
statement covering drilling is being developed and will be available
shortly. Copies of the statements are
here.
Please send any comments you may have to MaryAnn Mihychuk,
mmihychuk@pdac.ca.
Legislation to create a new Fisheries Act was
tabled in Parliament on Wednesday, December 13. The proposed new Act,
tabled as Bill C-45, is available
here. For further information, please contact MaryAnn Mihychuk,
