Thank you
for responding to our membership survey
Over 700 of our members responded to our survey which was sent out
over the summer. Thank you! The results of the survey were used during a
recent strategic planning exercise conducted by the PDAC’s board of
directors. The objective was to identify areas on which the association
should focus over the next three or four years. Results will be
distributed to you as soon as they are available. In the meantime, we
are pleased to announce that the winner of the gold wafer is Merline
Djouka Fonkwe.

Some PDAC Convention
2007 reminders

wanting to present a paper in the open session at next year’s convention
[March 4-7, 2007].

Graduate students invited to apply for Mary-Claire Ward Geoscience Award
Applications are now being accepted from graduate students for the
third Mary-Claire Ward Geoscience Award. The award consists of $3,000 in
cash and a certificate that is given annually to a graduate student at a
Canadian university whose thesis incorporates geoscience mapping as a
significant component. The deadline for applications is December 15,
2006. The presentation of the award takes place either at the PDAC’s
annual convention or at the annual meeting of the Geological Association
of Canada, depending on the winning student’s choice. Full details and
application form are
here.

PDAC mission delivers strong message to MPs and senior government
officials in Ottawa
Nine PDAC representatives participated in a highly successful lobbying
mission to Ottawa on September 20 and 21, the second of its kind held
this year. The objective of the mission was to increase the federal
government’s awareness of the importance of Canada’s exploration
industry and to reinforce the association’s
strategy for a strong exploration sector. Participants included the
PDAC president, Patricia Dillon; directors Lynda Bloom, Don Bubar, Leni
Keough, Anne Slivitzky, and Rob Whittall; and staff members Philip
Bousquet, Kim MacDonald and MaryAnn Mihychuk. Over the two-day event,
teams held 23 meetings with 14 MPs, 23 senior officials, and
representatives of the Assembly of First Nations. The federal government
was asked to extend the “super” flow-through program after March 2007,
commit to funding the Cooperative Geological Mapping Strategies, update
Canadian Exploration Expense, and streamline fisheries regulations. The
association is organizing a letter-writing campaign to seek endorsement
for components of the PDAC’s strategy. Please see the following item.

Letter-writing campaign to support our efforts in Ottawa
The PDAC believes that the importance of the ministers’ message cannot
be ignored and is inviting members to participate in a letter-writing
campaign to the federal government. We feel that a campaign of this kind
will also add weight to our lobbying for an extension to “super”
flow-through, funding for geological mapping, updating of CEE, and
clarification in the Income Tax Act of the term “mine.” A draft letter
as a word document for your use is
here. Word file Please do
not hesitate to contact MaryAnn Mihychuk, director of regulatory
affairs, mmihychuk@pdac.ca, or
Philip Bousquet, director of sustainability,
pbousquet@pdac.ca if you have any
questions.

New community engagement course based on e3 Environmental Excellence in
Exploration
The PDAC is pleased to announce that a new course on community
engagement is now available. The course, in six parts, is being offered
in conjunction with InfoMine and is based on e3 Environmental Excellence
in Exploration. The course qualifies for professional development
credits.
