Metals
Economics Group seeks exploration data
Metals Economics Group is a primary source of information on exploration
and mining statistics and is currently collecting information from
companies about their 2006 non-ferrous exploration budgets. If your
company has not been contacted by MEG for this information, would you
please send your name, company, and telephone number to
CES_survey@metalseconomics.com, and a researcher will call you. The

Standing Committee
on Natural Resources
The federal Standing Committee on Natural Resources has been
re-constituted and met for the first time on June 1 to receive some
basic information about the mineral industry and the current challenges
it faces. Executive Director Tony Andrews was a member of a panel which
also included representatives of the Mining Association of Canada,
Natural Resources Canada and Mining Watch. Mr. Andrews gave a
presentation on Canada’s exploration sector. We do have a full
transcript of the meeting which contains the text of the presentations
and questions and answers. However, the text is long [over 30 pages]. If
you would like a copy emailed to you, please contact
Teresa Barrett.

Presentations and papers
On April 27, Tony Andrews presented a paper, Canada: A leading
contributor to international exploration and development, to the 15th
Calgary Mining Forum, organized by the Calgary Mineral Exploration
Group.
On June 5, MaryAnn Mihychuk, Director, Regulatory Affairs, delivered a
paper on the implications of the 2006 federal government budget for the
mineral industry to the Insight Mining Business and Investment Forum in
Toronto.
On June 8, President Patricia Dillon made a presentation, Global trends
in the exploration business: A PDAC perspective, to the Australian
National Mining Congress 2006 in Perth, Australia.

PDAC represented in St.
Petersburg
Past president Bill Mercer and Deborah McCombe, chair of the
International Affairs Committee, represented the PDAC in an NRCan
delegation that attended mineral industry events alongside the St.
Petersburg Economic Forum in Russia, from June 14-16. Russian officials
are keenly interested in attracting exploration investment to their
country and to learn more about how the Canadian junior exploration
sector operates.

Geoscience mobility research papers now available
In early 2006, the PDAC commissioned the Institute On Governance (IOG)
to conduct background research on the issue of the professional
registration of geoscientists in Canada. The research papers are
available for review and comment. The working paper summarizes the views
of the regulatory organizations and proposes options for improving
mobility and is available
here. The survey report offers the views of practising geoscientists
and is available
here. Please contact
Philip Bousquet for
more details.

Roundtables
on corporate social responsibility
In our last
e-newsletter, we reported on the preparations being made for a
series of cross-Canada roundtables on corporate social responsibility.
The first one took place in Vancouver in mid-June. Tony Andrews and
director Dennis Jones represented the PDAC. The subject under discussion
at these roundtables is vitally important for exploration and mining
companies, particularly those working outside Canada, and the PDAC is
hoping for more participation from the mineral industry. The next one
will be held in Toronto; the date has not yet been announced. Please
contact Tony Andrews,
for more details.

PDAC provides funds for university earth science students
The PDAC has contributed $50,000 to the Geological Association of
Canada’s Logan Student Trust Fund. The trust fund supports and
encourages earth science students at Canadian universities through a
network of student chapters, formerly known as GAC student chapters and
now re-named Logan student chapters. These chapters are eligible to
apply each year for funds to help support student activities such as
field trips, field schools, and conference participation. To create a
student chapter and to qualify for funding, a student earth science club
at a university should have at least ten student members of either the
PDAC or the GAC and a faculty or community advisor who is also a PDAC or
GAC member.

Professional Geoscientists of Ontario on June 1, 2006. The APGO is the
