PDAC continues its advocacy campaign
A team of PDAC representatives is in Ottawa this week visiting
politicians and senior government officials and highlighting the
importance of re-instating the Investment Tax Credit for Exploration [ITCE].
The PDAC’s position, which is supported by Canadian mines ministers, is
that Canada needs the ITCE to ensure a prolonged and sustained period of
exploration to produce discoveries. The association has demonstrated
that the program keeps exploration investment in Canada, and is
important in the face of intense global competition from other mining
jurisdictions. The team will also be pressing for the federal government
to invest in geoscience and mapping through the $25 million per year
Cooperative Geological Mapping Strategy, and to modernize the outdated
definitions of Canadian Exploration Expense. For a copy of the PDAC’s
presentation, please contact
MaryAnn Mihychuk,
Director of Regulatory Affairs.

Thanks for responding to survey on professional mobility
Thank you to the 270 members who took the time to respond to the survey
on professional mobility which was conducted during PDAC Convention 2006
and for a couple of weeks afterwards. Results will be tabulated and will
be used as part of the research that the PDAC geoscience committee is
conducting, through the Institute On Governance, on the issue of
professional registration and mobility of geoscientists. We shall keep
you informed. For more information, contact
Philip Bousquet,
Director of Sustainability.

Securities committee chair presents to Crawford Panel hearings
Greg Ho Yuen, chair of the PDAC’s securities committee, made a
presentation to a roundtable of the Crawford Panel in Winnipeg on March
2. This panel is an Ontario initiative and, working independently of
government, is developing recommendations for a securities regulatory
framework that features a common securities regulator, a common body of
securities law, and a single fee structure. Mr. Ho Yuen’s presentation
was based on a
written brief that the PDAC submitted late in 2005.

World Mines Ministries Forum
The fourth World Mines Ministries Forum was held in Toronto immediately
prior to PDAC Convention 2006. This forum, a bi-annual event, brings
together mines ministers and senior government officials and
representatives of industry, First Nations, and NGOs to discuss issues
of common concern. A number of PDAC directors and staff participated in
this year’s event. Director Steve Vaughan and Executive Director Tony
Andrews provided an industry view on the main topics of the forum, which
were introduced during the plenary session. Mr. Vaughan also organized
and co-chaired a session on corporate social responsibility in the
mining industry. Past president William Mercer gave a luncheon address,
The importance and role of government in promoting mineral
exploration – A personal view, and director Ian Thomson presented a
paper, Geological surveys, mineral exploration, communities and
sustainable development.

Meetings during PDAC
Convention 2006
The PDAC’s annual convention offers excellent networking opportunities,
not only for our members but also for the association’s board of
directors, committees, and staff. In this way, the advocacy work of the
association continues. Click here
for a list of meetings and events in which the PDAC was represented.

Guide to
regulatory environments around the world
Mining: The regulation of exploration and extraction in 28
jurisdictions worldwide is a 133-page hard copy publication
summarizing the regulatory regimes for mining [including exploration] of
28 countries in 2005. The document was produced by Law Business Research
Ltd. in association with McMillan Binch Mendelsohn LLP. This is a very
practical guide which is well laid out and easy to understand. While its
primary target audience is general counsel, government agencies, and
private practice lawyers, junior companies anticipating exploring
overseas would probably find this publication a valuable reference tool.

the mining cycle. The PDAC is a major sponsor of the exploration
