PDAC
presents brief to 2005 Mines Ministers’ Conference
President Peter Dimmell will be presenting the PDAC’s brief to Canada’s
mines ministers at their annual conference next week in St. Andrews, New
Brunswick. The submission refers to the strong global demand for mineral
commodities over the next two to three decades and calls for governments
and industry to work together to develop a strategy that will enable
Canada to benefit from this demand. Chief among the PDAC’s
recommendations is the extension of the ‘super’ flow-through program,
which is due to expire at the end of this year.

brief [which includes a summary].

Agreement in place to manage Spanish version of E3
PDAC members operating in Latin America and overseas recognize the need
for E3 to be translated and made available in Spanish. Thanks to the
efforts of the E3 committee and director Anne Slivitzky, translation
will soon be underway, opening up new opportunities for our sector to
inform companies, individuals, communities and governments about E3’s
environmental and social guidelines for mineral exploration. On
September 13, PDAC director Deborah McCombe represented the PDAC during
a signing ceremony at a mining conference in Arequipa, Peru, with the
Instituto de Ingenieros de Minas del Perú. The institute will be
responsible for promoting and managing the Spanish-language version of
E3. This is an important step in the PDAC’s efforts to expand the
awareness and use of E3 by offering the material in such languages as
French, Spanish and Portuguese.

NRCan
invites companies to China Mining 2005 events
Natural Resources Canada is inviting companies already active in China
or that are contemplating working in the country to participate in
events being planned in conjunction with China Mining 2005 [November
15-17 in Beijing]. NRCan, in its role of supporting the Canadian private
sector, will be participating in the conference proper and is working
with the Canadian Association of Mining Equipment and Services for
Export [CAMESE] on a Canadian pavilion to increase the visibility of
Canadian companies at the conference. The federal government is hoping
to provide further benefits to Canadian companies by arranging: an
informal meeting with Canadian companies and federal officials to
discuss and share experiences gained from working in China; a workshop
to provide Canadian companies with opportunities to promote themselves
to a select group of Chinese government and industry representatives.

Why not
nominate your company for a PDAC award?
The Awards Committee invites nominations for the PDAC annual awards,
which are presented during the association’s annual convention in March.
Of particular interest to the committee are nominations for the E3
Environmental Excellence in Exploration Award, which honours companies
demonstrating outstanding initiative, leadership, and accomplishment in
protecting and preserving the natural environment during an exploration
program or operation of a mine. The award also recognizes a company’s
efforts to establish and maintain good relations with local communities
during exploration or mine operations. The committee believes that there
are many great stories out there that demonstrate corporate
responsibility in protecting the environment or fostering good community
relations. Please don’t be shy. If you think your company deserves an
award, send us your story.

Call for papers
for PDAC Convention 2006
Convention organizers have issued a call for papers for the 2006 Open
Session to be held during the PDAC convention [Sunday, March 5 to
Wednesday, March 8 in Toronto]. Policy and technical papers are invited.
There are alternative venues for presentations that promote companies
and their activities. There is no fee to participate. The closing date
for submissions is November 30, 2005, and selected speakers will be
notified in January 2006.

Canoe journey to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Treaty 9
PDAC director Glenn Nolan, Chief of the Missanabie Cree First Nation,
organized and led a summer-long canoe journey across northern Ontario to
commemorate the original signing of James Bay Treaty 9 in 1905 and 1906.
The group of paddlers is retracing the canoe route taken by the British
Commissioners 100 years ago, visiting First Nation communities
throughout northern Ontario. In Ottawa on September 15, they will be
officially welcomed by government dignitaries. The PDAC has actively
supported this journey and congratulates Glenn and his team for an
outstanding achievement.

Sept 15 Treaty 9 commemoration ceremony on the Ottawa River
