West defeats East
in annual hockey game
The West won the 16th Annual Norman B. Keevil Memorial Hockey Game by a
narrow margin. The final score was West 15, East 13. The game was played
on March 8 at the Lakeshore Lions Arena and was sponsored by Fugro
Airborne Surveys and Tindi Air. Jim Priest, who organizes and referees
the game, reports that John Whyte won the Tindi Air jacket. John scored
nine goals!

Advocacy work
continues during convention
As a meeting place, the convention is second to none. It is also a good
opportunity for the association to continue its advocacy activities on
behalf of the industry. There are many meetings organized to do this. To

Mining in
Society Show, Toronto, April 24-26
The PDAC is happy to be participating in the upcoming
Mining in Society Show, to be held April 24-26 in the north building
of the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. E3 Environmental Excellence in
Exploration and PDAC Mining Matters will be on display. Laura Clinton,
PDAC Mining Matters coordinator, has been working on a wide range of
activities for the many school children who are expected to attend. The
event, which is part of the CIM conference, will demonstrate the
importance of mining in people’s lives and how mining products
contribute to our standard of living. The show will also highlight the
technological and environmental advances made by the industry. Mining in
Society is open to the public and will be held from 12 noon to 5 p.m. on
Sunday and Monday, April 24 and 25, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on
Tuesday, April 26. It’s a family affair with lots to interest the young
and not so young. Please show your support for what promises to be a
fabulous show.
Organizers have put out a call for volunteers to fill a number of roles,
including helping with gold panning and acting as roving ambassadors. If
you would like to volunteer, please contact Michael Legg at
mlegg2004@yahoo.ca.

Ontario Bill 133
referred to committee
The PDAC is working with a coalition of associations and companies to
respond to the Environmental Enforcement Statute Law Amendment Act, 2004
(Bill 133). The mines and minerals sector sent submissions to the
government that were posted on the Environmental Registry and an
industry coalition has represented the concerns expressed across a
number of sectors. On April 5, the Ontario government decided to refer
the bill to a legislative committee. Public hearing dates have not yet
been scheduled. For more information, please contact Philip Bousquet,
pbousquet@pdac.ca, or visit the Ontario legislature website at
www.ontla.on.ca.

GSC
invites comments on Targeted Geoscience Initiative
The 2005 federal budget included a five-year extension of the GSC's
Targeted Geoscience Initiative (TGI) program with funding at $5 million
a year for a total of $25 million. The funding is to be used for
geological mapping in support of base metal exploration around existing
mining communities. GSC representatives are planning to hold a workshop
in Toronto on April 28 to outline where they think the TGI projects
should be carried out and what they should involve. The PDAC will be
represented at this workshop. Members are invited to send their comments
on this topic to Philip Bousquet, Director, Sustainability, pbousquet@pdac.ca,
for submission to the workshop.

Global Business
Coalition on HIV/AIDS
Earlier this year, PDAC Director Patricia Dillon and Executive Director
Tony Andrews met with Neeraj Mistry of the Global Business Coalition on
HIV/AIDS, a non-profit organization focused on developing the capacity
of the business and industrial sectors to assist in the fight against
HIV/AIDS. Mr. Mistry was seeking advice on how to extend the reach of
his organization into the mining sector and in particular, smaller
companies. For further information about this initiative,

Tony
Andrews.
