PDAC e-News and Activities, February 11, 2004, No. 14
Mapstaking recommendations approved by PDAC board
Members will recall that the board of directors, at its March 2003
meeting, decided that the PDAC should advocate map staking as a
strategy for acquiring mineral rights in Canada. The board
emphasized strongly that this decision did not mean that the PDAC
was opposed to ground staking and subsequently established an ad hoc
committee to study land acquisition across Canada and to recommend a
position for the association. Among the committee’s recommendations,
which were approved by the board last month, are that in
jurisdictions where it is not already established, mapstaking should
be adopted in surveyed areas and in areas remote from infrastructure
and communities.

recommendations.

Protected areas database is online
The PDAC has compiled a database on the current
status of protected area strategies in Canada. The database, which
is the only single source of information on protected areas in
Canada, consists of text descriptions of protected areas processes
and strategies for all jurisdictions in Canada.

the database.

PDAC Convention 2004 is going to be big!
All indications are that our upcoming convention –
March 7 to 9 – will be busy, exciting, and rewarding. There are 330
companies registered in the Investors Exchange and 280 companies and
organizations in the Trade Show. The core shack is full; the
technical program contains a broad spectrum of sessions to suit all
interests; and we are expecting an unprecedented level of
international interest. Argentina, India and Peru have booked
country rooms to demonstrate their geological and political
advantages, and delegations are expected from many parts of the
world. For more information about the activities during the
convention, please go to
http://www.pdac.ca/pdac/conv/index.aspx.

Access to E3 will be free as of March
E3 Environmental Excellence in Exploration is one of the
association’s most important initiatives. This compilation of
practical methods and best practices offers guidance to exploration
personnel and industry stakeholders on how best to conserve and
protect the environment during an exploration project. Thanks to the
generosity of E3 sponsors, paid subscriptions to E3 will be
eliminated as of March 2004, and access will become free of charge.
Users will simply be asked to register their names, organizations
and email addresses before they are given access to its contents.
Awareness and use of E3 have been growing
rapidly since the launch in March 2003. Currently, E3 has users in
24 countries. A significant increase in users is anticipated when E3
becomes freely available.
If your company is a service
provider in the environmental and/or social area, you will now be able
to list your company in the E3 service directory.
