Submission
to 2002 Mines Ministers Conference
The PDAC will be representing the
exploration and development sector at the next Mines Ministers
Conference, which will be held in Winnipeg on September 17. The
association consulted widely with members and industry associations
across the country on what topics should be included in its
submission. Subjects selected include: access to capital and to
land; funding to maintain Canada’s geoscience knowledge base;
portability of professional geoscientist status; and an extension of
and adjustments to the temporary Investment Tax Credit for
Exploration (‘super’ flow-through share program).

Study on
declining ore reserves in Canada
The PDAC has been involved in a
year-long study that aims to answer the question: Is Canada
conducting exploration at levels sufficient to replace its ore
reserves and, therefore, to maintain its mining industry? The study,
which also includes Natural Resources Canada and Queen’s
University, has examined recent exploration trends, rates of
discovery, production levels, and reserves. The results will be
presented at a special session, Sustainability of mineral reserves
in Canada, which will be held on September 16 in conjunction with
the Mines Ministers Conference.

Call
for papers for Convention 2003
The association has issued a call for
papers for the open session at next year’s convention (March 9-12,
2003). Click here for full text.
The first brochures for the 2003 are now in the works. May we call
on members to help distribute them? If you are travelling outside
Canada, could you take a handful to distribute to individuals who
might be interested in attending the convention? Please contact
Evelyn Liougas, who will be happy to send you copies. Thanks!

Meeting
with Peruvian government representative
Director Anne Slivitzky met with Dr.
Maria Chappuis, a senior advisor to the Peruvian vice-minister of
energy and mines, on August 23. Dr. Chappuis was in Canada to visit
regional mining offices in Ontario and in Québec in anticipation of
the Peruvian ministry’s decentralization. Ms. Slivitzky talked
about the structure of associations in Canada and the differences
between junior mining in Canada and Peru.

Have
you joined the Core?
