PDAC supports Canadian government initiatives on regulatory reform

January 2012
- The Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) is encouraged by the federal government's commitment to an improved regulatory process.

In his statement of January 9, the Honourable Joe Oliver, Minister of Natural Resources, said that the regulatory process is an urgent matter of Canada’s national economic interest and that reviews for major projects can be accomplished “in a quicker and more streamlined fashion”.

As a national association representing close to 9,000 individual and corporate members involved in mineral exploration and development, the PDAC is working to ensure that Canada continues to be the world leader in attracting exploration investment.

“An effective regulatory system is a key factor in a company’s decision about where to invest”, said Ross Gallinger, Executive Director of the PDAC. “Mineral exploration is a high-risk venture and companies want to know that the permitting and regulatory process is consistent and timely. We are confident that improvements can be made that continue to satisfy social and environmental objectives while allowing for new projects and jobs.”

In its 2011 submission to Canada’s Energy and Mines Ministers, the PDAC, in collaboration with the country’s other mining-related associations, noted regulatory effectiveness as a significant challenge facing the mineral industry.

Canada’s Mines Ministers responded with a commitment to maintaining Canada's competitive advantage through the identification of current mining sector risks and opportunities. As stated in their July 19 news release: “The ministers reaffirmed their commitment to working toward the shared objective of one-project/one-review for environmental assessments and associated regulatory processes to position Canada for long-term growth and job creation while maintaining the highest standards of environmental protection. They underlined the importance of an effective and efficient regulatory system with timely, transparent, fair and predictable processes.”

The PDAC is a national association that exists to protect and promote mineral exploration and to ensure a robust mining industry in Canada. The PDAC encourages the highest standards of technical, environmental, safety and social practices in Canada and internationally.
