PDAC statement: CSR report on Excellon Resources’ minesite in Mexico
Oct. 21, 2011 - The PDAC is aware of the report
published by the Extractive Sector Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Counsellor regarding the request to review Excellon Resources Inc.’s La
Platosa mine project in Mexico. Prior to the company withdrawing from
the process, the PDAC arranged a meeting between the CSR Counsellor and
Excellon Resources to allow each party to examine the complexities of
the situation and to explore possible next steps. As more
information becomes available on the issues and the process, the PDAC
will use the outcomes as a learning opportunity to improve Good Practice
tools, such as e3 Plus – A Framework for Responsible Exploration, and to
contribute to future dialogue. The PDAC is committed to
developing and improving CSR programs and strategies. The PDAC was
involved in the federal National Roundtable Process on Corporate Social
Responsibility and Canadian Extractive Industries in Developing
Countries. The federal government responded in March 2009 with Building
the Canadian Advantage: A CSR Strategy for the Canadian International
Extractive Sector. The PDAC supports this multi-faceted
approach and is interested in seeing an effective and workable process
for reviewing companies’ CSR-related activities. We recognize that this
work will encounter growing pains. Local issues can be highly complex,
and it is only through actually testing and reviewing such cases that we
gain the insight required to yield solutions.
