International • Issues & Advocacy
Over the past fifteen years to twenty years, the
international role and influence of the PDAC have been growing
significantly. A short article (January 2007) on this development is
here.
In 2005, the PDAC’s board of directors established its
International Affairs Committee to provide direction for and manage
the PDAC’s role in the global community. The objectives of the
committee, which is chaired by Deborah McCombe, are to:
-
increase the capacity to monitor the
international scene, develop strategies, prioritize issues,
coordinate activities within the association and respond to issues;
-
improve the profile and credibility of the PDAC
internationally;
-
assist in the generation and implementation of
ideas that will enhance international attendance at the annual
convention and increase international membership in the association.
During the PDAC’s 2006 strategic planning process,
the growing global role of the association was identified as one of four
priority areas to be addressed. The
goals and objectives
for this area were approved by the board of directors in March 2007, and
at the time of writing (April 2007) a committee was developing an action
plan for their implementation. This will be posted here as soon as it
becomes available.
International Council on Mining and Metals
The PDAC is active in the work of the
International Council for
Mining and Metals (ICMM) as it deals with issues of direct interest
to association members. The PDAC brings the perspective of the
exploration sector to the ICMM whose membership consists of the largest
mining companies in the world, national associations and commodity
associations. PDAC representatives have attended ICMM meetings on
various issues, such as mining and human rights, biodiversity and
protected areas and indigenous peoples issues.
Participation in international conferences
The committee also organizes PDAC’s representation at selected meetings
and conferences around the world that are of strategic importance to the
Canadian exploration sector. During 2005-2006, the association was
represented at: China Mining Conference, Fennoscandian Exploration and
Mining, the Asia-Pacific Mining Conference and the Australia-based
Association of Mining and Exploration Companies National Congress.
