e3 Plus: A Framework for Responsible Exploration

In March 2009, the PDAC launched e3 Plus: A Framework for Responsible Exploration. This program follows on from the association’s flagship e3 environmental excellence in exploration, designed initially as a program to foster environmental excellence but gradually expanded to include community engagement and social responsibility issues. The designation e3 today stands for excellence in social responsibility; excellence in environmental stewardship; and excellence in health and safety. The ‘plus’ demonstrates the new program’s significant expansion from its predecessor.

e3 Plus provides a voluntary benchmark that exploration and mining companies can use and tailor to their own needs and circumstances. At the time of writing (May 2009), e3 Plus consists of principles and guidance and three toolkits: social responsibility; environmental stewardship; and health and safety. NOAMI (National Orphaned / Abandoned Mines Initiative)

The PDAC is a funding partner and participant in NOAMI (National Orphaned / Abandoned Mines Initiative). Orphaned or abandoned mines are those mines for which the owner cannot be found or for which the owner is financially unable or unwilling to carry out clean-up.

The legacy of orphaned/abandoned mines, with the associated environmental liability, human health concerns and the financial costs of clean up, continues to be a serious issue facing Canada. Since 2002, Canada's Mines Ministers have signaled their commitment to address this environmental issue with continued support for the National Orphaned/Abandoned Mines Initiative.

NOAMI is a co-operative and innovative Canadian program that is guided by an advisory committee consisting of the mining industry, federal/provincial/territorial governments, First Nations and environmental non-governmental organizations. The committee's role is to assess key issues and put forward recommendations to Mines Ministers concerning collaborative approaches and partnerships in the implementation of remediation programs across Canada. For more information, please see the NOAMI website at: http://www.abandoned-mines.org/
