New tool helps collect and share data
PDAC’s Exploration Assessment Digital Data Formats (EADDF) guidelines is a way to help improve discovery rates of mineral exploration in Canada. The guidelines propose a uniform national standard for digital data submission for jurisdictional mine recording offices. While each jurisdiction has its own formatting requirements there are few for data submitted in digital form. Learn more

Mining project named in supercluster
The Federal Government has chosen a clean resources project by the mining industry as one of the nine so-called “supercluster” proposals that could qualify for a piece of the $950 million fund to help boost job creation and the economy. Up to five consortiums will be eligible for a piece of the fund which will be spent over five years. Learn more

Infrastructure

Advancing northern infrastructure
The NWT & Nunavut Chamber of Mines says it is encouraged by advances in several northern infrastructure projects that will generate socio-economic benefits for northern residents and communities. The transportation infrastructure defict in remote Canada makes it significantly more expensive to explore and mine. Support for remote and northern Canada remains  a PDAC priority and is one of five federal budget recommendations. Learn more

Capital Markets

Recovery of exploration expenditures
New data by S&P Global Market Intelligence confirms the view held by many analysts and pundits; that the mining exploration sector is firmly, but cautiously, emerging from a protracted downturn. Preliminary analysis shows that the annual global nonferrous exploration budget has increased for the first time since 2012, rising by more than 14% year-over-year to $9.94 billion. Learn more

Responsible Exploration

Mining transparency measures take effect in Québec
Regulation related to transparency in Québec‘s mining industry came into force on August 3. The legislation requires some enterprises to declare certain payments to payees. The measures are intended to discourage corruption and to foster the social acceptability of projects. Learn more

CIRDI study explores determinants of conflict
Effective resource governance can stimulate sustainable economic growth, enhance equitable distribution of national wealth, broaden public engagement, ensure access to justice and protect human rights. However, a rich endowment of mineral resources can lead to conflict, with the social drivers and political determinants of these conflicts poorly understood. A new project by an interdisciplinary team of academics and professionals seeks to apply, mobilize and disseminate new research on the processes, pathways and dynamics of conflicts near projects. Read phase 1 of the study, “The Rise in Conflict Associated with Mining Operations: What Lies Beneath?”

Take part in mining industry survey
The Fraser Institute conducts an annual global survey of mining industry executives and managers to rank jurisdictions around the world based on their attractiveness for exploration and mining investment. After a year behind Australia, Canada returned to the top spot in 2016, with Saskatchewan and Manitoba coming in at number one and two respectively. To participate in this year's survey, send your name, job title and email to [email protected]

Human Resource Development

Realities of Canadian mineral exploration
The Mining Industry Human Resources Council (MiHR) and PDAC conducted a pilot study on the exploration industry. Based on responses from the national survey, the report helps fill a gap in labour market information, allowing for a more refined and accurate reflection of Canada’s mineral exploration sector. This research will support stakeholders in creating strategies to increase the industry’s ability to engage new pools of talent in mineral exploration. Read the report

S-IMEW: call for nominations
