PDAC President Featured on BNN

PDAC President Glenn Nolan was featured on Business News Network on January 11 on Headline with Howard Green. Mr. Nolan was interviewed about resource development and First Nations. During the interview, Glenn focused on the PDAC’s position of encouraging industry to engage early and often with Aboriginal communities, and to establish mutually respectful relationships that create opportunities for Aboriginal peoples to participate in the economic opportunities created by resource development. PDAC Partners with MiHR for HR Study

The PDAC is partnering with the Mining Industry Human Resources Council (MiHR) to undertake a study on the impacts of field experience on the flow, recruitment and retention of talent from education in geosciences to the mineral exploration industry. This research builds on the recommendations from the 2011 national sector study Unearthing Possibilities which was conducted in partnership between MiHR and PDAC. The purpose of the new study is to better understand geoscience graduates’ career choices, what influences graduates' career decisions, and to stimulate a proactive approach to addressing the retention challenges facing the exploration sector. As part of the research process, MiHR is currently seeking information from alumni of geoscience university programs across Canada.

CSR Event Series Sessions for PDAC 2013 Convention Announced

The program for the Corporate Social Responsibility Event Series at the PDAC 2013 Convention is now available on the Convention website. This year, the Series has been expanded to offer 11 sessions reflecting a range of issues related to CSR in the mining industry, and the exploration sector in particular. The Series is open to all Convention delegates and the public, and is free to attend. Click here for more information.

ICMM Publishes Report on Health and Safety Indicators in the Mining Industry

In December, the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) launched a report on leading indicators for occupational health and safety in the mining industry. The report includes: a framework for developing leading indicators; a common definition of leading indicators and their limitations; guidance on how leading indicators can be used and implemented; and case studies on how companies have been using them. Student Orientation Webinar for PDAC 2013 Convention

 “A Student’s Guide to the PDAC 2013 Convention” is a webinar designed to help students plan their Convention experience. The webinar provides an overview of the Convention and highlights of the Student Program. Students can get tips on how to network, make a good impression, write an impressive resume and more. Student Program at PDAC 2013 Convention

New to the Student Program at this year’s Convention is “Convention Kickstart,” an orientation session on March 3 that includes networking tips students can put to use immediately at the Welcome Reception that follows. The Student-Industry Networking Luncheon is back this year, and will be held at a larger venue in the North Building—Room 105/106. PDAC-SEG Canada Minerals Colloquium

On March 4, the PDAC, in cooperation with SEG Canada Foundation and the Ottawa-Carleton Geoscience Centre, will host the Annual "Minerals Colloquium" at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto. The Minerals Colloquium will include up to 100 poster presentations highlighting current research on mineral deposits and related studies by graduate students from across North America. Students working on projects with a link to mineral deposits (mapping, mineralogy, geochemistry, environmental) are encouraged to prepare posters for this event. Click here for more information.

Canada Contributes $15 million for Mineral Resource Development in Africa

On January 8, 2013, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced that the Government of Canada is contributing $15.3 million over five years to the new African Mineral Development Centre (AMDC) through a Canadian International Development Agency grant to the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, making Canada the lead founding donor. In 2011, the African Union agreed to create the AMDC as part of its commitment to the Africa Mining Vision Action Plan. The Action Plan supports the transparent, equitable and optimal development of Africa's mineral resources.

Nova Scotia Mineral Incentive Program Prospector Marketing Grants

As of December 17, 2012, the Mineral Resources Branch of the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources is accepting applications for Prospector Marketing Grants under the 2012 NSMIP. Prospector Marketing Grants up to $1,250 are available to prospectors who apply to attend mineral industry conferences and/or trade shows in order to market their mineral property for option or sale. Call for Submissions for SEG 2013 Conference

The Society of Economic Geologists (SEG) and the SEG Canada Foundation are pleased to announce that a major conference, “Whistler 2013: Geoscience for Discovery,” will be held at the Whistler Conference Centre from September 24 - 27, 2013, in Whistler, B.C. Abstract submission is now open for oral and poster presentations. The Technical Program Committee invites individuals to submit an abstract for presentation at the conference. Mining Indaba

PDAC President Glenn Nolan and 2nd Vice President Robert Schafer will be attending Mining Indaba in Cape Town, South Africa, February 4 - 7, 2013. Mining Indaba is the world’s largest gathering of mining’s most influential stakeholders and decision-makers vested in African mining. 2012 was a record breaking year, with more than 7,000 individuals representing more than 1,500 international companies from 100 countries and approximately 45 African and non-African government delegations in attendance.

CMIC Signature Event

On February 12, 2013, the Canada Mining Innovation Council (CMIC) will hold a day-long meeting in Toronto to discuss innovation in the Canadian mining industry. The CMIC Signature Event is aimed at senior executives and decision-makers in mining and exploration companies, consulting companies, manufacturers, academia and government.
