PDAC-Caracle Cup 2011
The fourth annual PDAC-Caracle Cup Hockey
Tournament was a terrific success. This year’s
tournament raised nearly $25,000 for PDAC Mining
Matters’ education initiatives. Thank you to the
participating teams, sponsors, volunteers, and
spectators for a fantastic event.
Originally planned for 12 teams, the tournament
drew such enthusiastic response that we had 16
entries from across the country, and 35 industry
sponsors backing the action. Teams and
individuals from all facets of the minerals
industry and all skill levels were welcome. And
the volunteer support from industry was amazing.
Committed volunteers stocked dressing rooms,
took photos, tracked scores, and greeted
players, really getting into the spirit of the
event. We’d like to thank everyone for their
enthusiastic participation and support.
Here is our excellent team line-up:
- Altius: Swamp Donkeys
- Callinan Mines Limited: The Pyrites
- Canadian Resources Insurance Solutions
- Caracle Creek: Ice Crushers
- Cassels Brock Lawyers: Eureka Veins
- DMC Mining Services: Team DMC
- Dynamic JP
- Fasken Martineau: Fasken Flyers
- Guyana Goldfields Limited: Los Pendejos
- Irwin Lowy LLP: Massive Sulphides
- KPMG: Tic Tac Toe
- Noront: Ring of Fire
- SGS: The Certifiables
- Treasury Metals Incorporated: Bullion
- Trelawney Mining and Exploration Ltd.:
Trelawney Prospects
- Wardrop
The teams played on NHL- and Olympic-size ice
sheets at Canlan Ice Sports in North York. Andy
Frost, popular Toronto Q107 FM radio host and
announcer for the Toronto Maple Leafs at Air
Canada Centre, dropped the initial puck,
launching the exciting competition.
The championship game between the Trelawney
Prospects and the KPMG Tic Tac Toe topped the
event. With a score of 4 to 2, the Trelawney
Prospects won the honour of having their team
and players’ names enshrined on the prestigious
Caracle Cup. The tournament elected most
valuable player (MVP) was Nathan Tribble,
Trelawney Prospects team captain and the
consolation final game ended with Guyana
Goldfields Los Pendejos taking the win from
Altius Swamp Donkeys in a final score of 3 to 2.
Adding to the intense hockey competition, extra
activities had everyone cheering, especially the
HDI $10,000 Shoot for Loot. The crowd was on its
feet when Valerie Murphy, of the SGS
Certifiables, tried to shoot a puck from the red
line into a 3.5 inch hole in a board at the net
to win $10,000. She missed by barely an inch—so
close.
Our raffle for a 1 oz. gold bar (worth a pretty
penny these days!), sponsored by Wildeboer
Dellelce LLP, gave Team DMC player Catharine
Farrow lots to cheer about when her name was
announced as winner. And winning bidders in our
silent auction took home a variety of sports
items, including a coveted signed Sidney Crosby
jersey.
The PDAC-Caracle Cup has become an important
annual fundraising event to support PDAC Mining
Matters’ education efforts and is an industry
favourite for networking and friendly
competition on the ice. We’re pleased to say
that, each year, the limited number of
sponsorships sell out quickly. If your company
would like to put together a team for the fifth
annual event, please contact Amanda Dillon at
416-863-6463 ext 321 or
adillon@pdac.ca.
Thanks to the 2011 PDAC-Caracle Cup Sponsors. |
