Are you looking for relevant, accurate geography and Earth science resources for secondary school educators and students? You’ve come to the right place. Mining Matters, known since 1994 for providing exceptional Earth science resources to junior / intermediate classrooms, now offers secondary school resources that meet provincial Earth science curriculum expectations.

ArcGIS
Mining Matters now offers our first learning resource for geographic information system (GIS) software. Partnering with ESRI Canada, we have adapted four hands-on activities from out senior curriculum resource, Discovering Diamonds, into a multi-part lesson that teaches high school students the use of ArcGIS, ESRI’s suite of GIS software products. The activity manual, master answer pages, and all data files are free to download.

Curriculum Kits: Senior
In 2007, Mining Matters officially launched Discovering Diamonds, our first secondary school resource.  It focuses on Canada’s world-class diamond-bearing deposits, diamond formation, and the modern technology being applied to the discovery, extraction, and processing of diamonds.

Discovering Diamonds kits meet Grades 11 and 12 Earth science and geography curriculum expectations.

Newsletter
Our 2007 inaugural issue of groundWORK: Senior Issue reached approximately 1,100 secondary school teachers in Ontario. Newsletters offer a variety of information: metal/mineral highlights, current articles, field trip ideas, gem show calendars, book reviews, Web sites, etc. Our first mailing included Nickelquest, a DVD about mining (now available to download), an Inuksuk puzzle, and our most recently developed teaching aid—a poster featuring the rocks and minerals that go into the making of a snowmobile.

Career Info
Secondary school students need to find information that can help them make informed career decisions. Examine the opportunities available in Earth science and mining as well as the university programs that will take them there.

Our many Resources and Earth Science Links suit secondary school curriculum as well as junior/intermediate studies—please take a look at them, too.
