2011 Teacher Mining Tour
Mining Matters in Newfoundland/Labrador
2011 Teacher Mining Tour
On August 15, approximately 30 educators from
Ontario participated in the second annual
“Teacher Mining Tour” hosted by the Canadian
Ecology Centre located in Samuel de Champlain
provincial park in Mattawa Ontario. The week
long learning event exposed teachers to a
variety of areas in the field of geosciences.
Teachers explored all aspects of the mining
cycle, from exploration, to touring the Xstrata
Nickel South mine (above and underground),
engaging discussions surrounding environmental
impact and sustainability, through to the land
reclamation process following mine closure. This
valuable professional development opportunity
was made possible by the contribution of the
following sponsors: the Ontario Mining
Association, CIM Northern Gateway and Sudbury
branches, Metal Mining Society, EdGeo and PDAC
Mining Matters.

Mining Matters in Newfoundland/Labrador
In March 2011, Mining Matters educator Janice
Williams and Geological Survey of Newfoundland
and Labrador (GSNL), Department of Natural
Resources educator and Outreach Geologist Amanda
McCallum took their passion for Earth science,
along with valuable teaching resources, to
Newfoundland’s Burin Peninsula. There, they
delivered a series of interactive, hands-on
workshops to classrooms of junior and
intermediate students, revealing the importance
of rocks, metals, and minerals in their daily
lives. The workshops allowed students to fully
participate in Earth science learning while
allowing teachers to observe model
presentations. The workshop series was a
partnership between Mining Matters and the
Department of Natural Resources, Geological
Survey of Newfoundland and Labrador. [more]
