The Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) serves the Canadian and international mineral exploration and development industry.

This area of the PDAC’s website is devoted to issues of importance and interest to people and companies involved in or associated with the global mineral exploration and development business.

January 13, 2010
The Canadian government today launched the Centre for Excellence in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) for the extractive industries. The establishment of the centre, which is web-based and lodged with the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum, is one of four pillars of the federal government’s CSR action plan, Building the Canadian advantage (see below). The new site will serve as a repository for information on CSR tools, rules, laws and best practices and will contain practical information and advice on foreign countries, local networks and relevant experiences of Canadian companies, civil society and other stakeholders working abroad.

March 2009
In Building the Canadian advantage: A CSR strategy for the international extractive sector, the Government of Canada commits to supporting initiatives to help developing countries manage the development of minerals and oil and gas and benefit from these resources to reduce poverty. In the same month, the PDAC launched e3 Plus: A Framework for Responsible Exploration, designed to help companies continuously improve their social responsibility, environmental stewardship and health and safety performance.

The PDAC and its international role
Over the past two decades, the international role and influence of the PDAC have been growing significantly. A short history of its evolving role was published in 2007, the association’s 75th anniversary, and is available here.

Strategic direction
Our international role is a priority area for the PDAC. This is set out in the association’s current strategic plan, which was implemented in 2007. Under the heading Directing the future in a globalizing industry, the plan identifies the goals and objectives that will help guide and direct our international work over the next five years.

Our work in the global arena
Our activities outside Canada are carried out under the direction of an International Affairs Committee, which is chaired by Deborah McCombe. The committee’s objectives and activities are described here.
